Data for corner velocity of aircraft
« on: September 13, 2008, 08:37:09 AM »
Hi, I'm wondering where I can find out information about the corner velocity of the planes in Aces High?  I tried a quick Google search for the diagrams that are supposed to show it, but had no luck.

last week a squaddie asked what the best sus turn speed for a Spit VIII was and I really didnt know (260/270ish?) presumably its pretty easy to calculate from the fm, so yes please :aok

click on the linked thread in Widewings quote below............read the thread and then get the calculator

Go to this thread, http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,233819.0.html and download Badboy's Bootstrap Calculator.

My regards,

interesting link ty :)

I tried it yesterday and its alot harder than you'd imagine keeping a steady constant speed/g/alt/stall buffet turn (no rudder allowed either), especially for 10 or so 360s.

also discovered that although ive always flown with scaled axes on my stick, my aileron/roll axis wasnt scaled. doh. no wonder Ive been finding the spit almost unflyably snappy these days (thought it was cus ive been in the tiffy alot )

anyways Spit VIII 50% no slipper 10k I got 188mph and 21.6s, giving stall 115mph and corner velocity 281mph. both seem too high to me but I didnt fly accurately enough to trust the results.

to get accurate figures is tricky and time consuming. however HT has the data and models so I'm guessing producing a graph for corner speed at the usual range of alts like we have for speed and climbrate for each aircraft wouldn't be too tricky.

I dont use scaling for aileron.  I've always prefered maximum sensitivity.  I wonder how many guys would actually do that?

Me - I only use scaling for elevators  :D

TequilaChaser, thanks for that link  :aok

On the BBS, Hitech once said something like this: corner velocity can be estimated by entering a high G flat turn at high speed, continuing the turn until the stall buzzer is loudest and the plane stalls.  That high-speed stall speed is approximately corner velocity.

Using the method, I estimate the corner velocity for a Hog is approximately 250 ias.

How close is that to Badboy's calculator?

HONK!

If you follow Leon's Test Procedures, you can quickly test and see where it falls in at, I would be redudant in performing the test procedure.......as in if you do a turn at sealevel ( say 50 ft or 100 ft off the deck, use 25% fuel, no stall limiter / no rudder input )...also try it turning left direction, and try it turning right direction.......

remember doing these test is time consuming, and takes awhile to learn how to gain the very best most accurate turn rate/turn speed.......

what I am trying to say is.......instead of doing just 1test of 5 turns deviding total time by 5, do this test 3 times or 5 times complete.and compare each completed 5 turn test...and see if you are being consistent........

you could take everyone in this particular thread .....all performing the exaCT SAME TEST ON THE SAME PLANE WITH SAME LOADOUT, AND WOULD BE LUCKY IF ONLY 2 OUT OF THE GROUP CAME CLOSE WITHIN 1% OF EACH OTHER WITH THE SAME TEST RESULTS. ( CRAP---sorry for the caps lock accidently )

until one becomes proficient with testing on a regular basis, and are able to put out test data to the public which others will test and compare to see how close/spot on you are.......then most will not look at your test data with very much appreciation........so don't get discouraged.most well known and reliable test data/AC performance data providers have been doing this for many years ( 10+ years ).and have been scrutinized by the community and have earned the community's respect by offering very detailed accurate information.......

you will not just be able to step into that particular group until you have proven yourself worthy of being able to offer consistent and accurate information.......

with Leon's ( Badboy's BootStrap Calculator and Test PRocedures PDF file/Instructions )...with enough patience & Practice.....and with others picking thru your results to verify....YOU MIGHT BECOME another reliable source of this type of information.......

just a friendly suggestion for those who wish to help contribute to the community......
