Moonshine
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:24:37 PM »
Anyone having experience on this topic?

I just received a 4,5 liter batch of the stuff and after drinking one measly (shot) glass of the stuff I find myself wasted. Boy this stuff must be strong!

Quite extensivly actually....

A freind of mine's brother used to come in from N.C. each year to play in a golf tournament. He used to bring me a quart of charred and everclear each year. VERY strong stuff.....

I used to sip the charred...and in the ever clear I'd put in some peppermint sticks to make it more like schnapps....GREAT during the winter time for colds and stuffy heads.

Be VERY careful. The quality and safety of moonshine varies GREATLY. Yes, it is very strong, it can be almost pure alcohol. Do not drink it unless you can be sure of the source. The good stuff is very good. The bad stuff can kill you.

Yeah I know this stuff comes from an area where it's been traditionally produced for hundreds of years. It should be good.

They've made it around here for close to two hundred years. I've run across stuff that was "distilled" in a radiator, among other things. It's a shame too, because traditionally it has been good stuff. But you always end up with fools who take short cuts because they are cheap and lazy.

Big clues are ANY cloudy stuff, any film left when it evaporates, and any after taste.

If it is good stuff, and I hope it is, you're in for a real treat so long as you drink responsibly. But yes, the stuff will hammer you. And it can sneak up on you, too.

We make a lovely drink called "Apple Pie" involving mixing Cider, Shine and grated cinnamon sticks.  Run them throuch a cheese cloth and drop a few cinnamon sticks (whole) in the jar and toss it in the fridge.

Tastes like apple pie and kicks like a mule :)

I have a friend who I exchange some good stuff with each year. He lives just outside of Greensboro, NC and gets me 4=6 quarts with peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries or wild black berries in it. I get him some good ole south Alabama moonshine that this black fellow who lives near my grandparents makes.

We get hammered when I go visit him and try to sell him pipe. Somehow I end up getting a sale or two out of the deal each year and he gets a heck of a deal.

Rule #1. Never drink any moonshine unless you know who made it. Personally.

Rule #2. Drink it only at home. Sitting down.

Yeah, moonshine will lay you out!  wooooooooo.

Just know who made it and make sure they know what they are doing.  Don't want billy bob from up in the holler making you go blind if the shine ended up denatured.
