Framerate .. comp performance help?
« on: October 06, 1999, 03:37:00 AM »
I joined the online game, but could do nothing in that slide show. My framerate was 3 at max, and I was only in the tower!!! (res 640x480). Offline framerate is about 28.

Specs:
233mmx, 80meg, some 8Gb hd, swapfile size 600meg, voodoo2 (4meg), DirectX 6.1, 56k modem, win95

Any ideas for directions how to solve this?

Hi,
it exists no V2 card with only 4mb, so i think you have a V1 card.
your PC is on the lower performance end and i don'T think you can get more out of your machine.

OK.. I suppose it has 8megs. It still is voodoo2.

My specs are above the requirements stated by  HiTech Creations. If these 3 frames are all I can get I think the requirements have to be set higher!

I do suspect that there is something wrong somewhere though. Other games work fine online eg. EAW at Zone or at Kali.

Hmm..dunno whats up with that. Fishu has a lowly p133 and gets5-7 fps..maybe more once hes airborne.

What is your primary video card?? If its direct 3d compatable your system might be using it instead of the voodoo2.

Make sure no other programs are runing in the background. check your systray and dump everything except your dial up connection. All those programs are sucking horsepower and memory from your system.

Also check to see if you have a winmodem.
If you do..I highly suggest you get it replaced. Winmodems use your cpu, not their own like a "normal" modem. This could be the reason you get 28 fps offline. Going online is causing the winmodem to suck the life out of your cpu.
As far as playing eaw on kali..or on the zone. EAW uses 256 colors, and is much less a drain on your cpu than the 16 million colors (16 bit) that AH uses.
Hope this helps some..good luck..

I have to just reemphasize this. I replaced
an internal 56K "Do it all but wash the windows" HSP modem (leaches off the host
and sucks up CPU cycles) with a three
year old US Robotics 33.6 Sportster external
modem. Unbelievable difference. Frame rates
better, connections are outstanding and
online warps and delay are superb.

Another easy way to see what is different
with your computer when trying AH out in offline and then online is do a [ctrl] [alt] [del] ONCE. Note what you have running when you try this offline. Go online, load up
AH, [alt] [tab] to minimize and then do a
[ctrl] [alt] [del] ONCE to see if you now have many more apps running. If you do,
such as ICQ or AIM, then shut them down by
selecting that application and ending it.

Good luck. <S>

BK: part of the Beta process is to determine what the minimum requirements will be for the final release.

The information posted on the HTC site is from early on in development and I believe was more a target that they were shooting for .

That should definitely do better than that 3fps.. Graphics is not the bottleneck, as it works fine in offline.

I have a PPro200 with VoodooI, which is playable, but not wonderful.

Ok, VoodooI has that texture memory shortage problem ("white outs"), but at least it shows 15-20 fps online, whenever it happens to work

Can't help more, but just to give some hope at least:-)

Hi. Let me guess... You're using Win95, am I right? I had the same problem: Hi fps off-line, 2-3 fps on-line, and HT saved the day. It's a bug in the old versions of winsock.
I went to microsoft's site (Argh...   and downloaded service pack 1, plus 2 more files related to network. It's working very nice now.
BTW, I posted a topic about it in the forum about stability.
Best regards.
