Actually what sealed it was the rounded vertical tail and the elongated nose. Once I stared long enough at the rudder and realized there was a triangular portion forward of the hinge line, it got easier.

Yeh, thought about that too, btw...also thought that the fact that horizontal stab is white and the rudder is deflected it might make things more difficult. looking at it straight from the side that tail looks VERY British! :)

Indeed. No Russian plane had such rounded leading edge. Suppose it wasn't their style.

But the engine compartment shape got me thinking. Nice one!  :aok

The contours of the cowling are pretty similar with the company's later fighter aircraft.

I dont know of any fighter aircraft that have a cowling like that... The cowling does resemble that of the Ju-52, but for some reason to me this bird looks like an Arado...

Sounds like you have Ar 196 on the brain. Build too many Bismark models as a kid? :)

Here's a weird coincidence. The captain of HMS Seal, a British mine-laying sub, surrendered his sub to an Ar 196 during the war. The captain had the unhappy distinction of being the only British commander to surrender his ship to the enemy in the entire war.

To me it looks like a Focke Wulf... :) and without checking (I'll do it later), I'd say this is the biplane fighter FW presented at the selection won by the Messerschmitt Bf-109...

Ok, bad guess... it's not the FW 159.... :cry

Serenity's right, it looks like an Arado/Heinkel biplane, but the tail doesn't look right....

Heinkel He 49? I can't find a picture of said type....
