Early Observations
« on: January 29, 2000, 04:05:00 PM »
This game has alot of potential but my early observations.

Blackout, maybe a little excessive.  Frustrates me a little, I wouldnt mind it being scaled back a little.

Ack - Way too good.  Jabo is a silly idea. Think about all those old films we have watched from WWII, it was never this good.

Distance between fields - looks okay on the map, but I find it takes quite a while to get anywhere.

Flight modeling - interesting, I dont want to fault it until I have flown awhile and adjusted to it, but sometimes it seems most planes fly pretty similar.  Strengths and weaknesses dont stand out as obvious as in another game alot of have played.  Maybe its just me.

Squad highlite is a nice feature I hope they add. I noticed Pyro said he would look into it.

Compression:  Man, it would be nice if we had some clues to warn us of impending compression instead of having to watch the airspeed indicator closely.  Prop speed increasing sounds or wind roaring or airframe vibrations, something like that would be nice to have.

Kill award: would be nice to have the squad shown as in warbirds with a players id for a kill.  Not real important, but is a nice feature. Also, would be nice to be able do differentiate between a kill and a manuever kill.  OTTO kills from buffs should not be shown as credit to the pilot unless he was really controlling the gun that killed the plane.  Not giving him unearned credit would also help discourage ackstars.  I also think that any plane that crashes and the pilot dies should be credited to the person who did the most damage even if he has already died and replaned.  He is still the guy that earned the kill.

Just a few off the cuff thoughts.

Dago,

There ain't no such thing as "Otto" here

All defensive guns are pilot manned.

Blackout.. I hardly get myself into blackout, when I do, its doing its purpose
Maybe I fly too fast and compres too much for high Gs, or I fly too slow.. or.. i simply just manage E with low G

Distance? It feels even too *short*, becuse you hardly get 13-20k during that travel, depending on plane
(note, those little 'hills' are just 7k high, and you'll barely get over those in a fighter from a field  )

No? Go try turn fight spitfrie in P-51.. though, if you've only flown spitfrie, you surely wont see any weaknesses
Though, those N1K2s diving like others.. naah!

Theres wind sound, it gets louder as you go faster
Oh sure you have little airframe vibrations, just pull the stick hard with enough speed

Err.. we don't have 'otto', that laser turret is manned by player. (how about letting pilot have piece of a kill that his possible player gunner does..)

What if the guy who made most damage, didn't do enough to drop the plane?
Maybe chew rudder, elevator, aileron... then one guy snaps his stab and gets assist for his kill?

There isnt otto right now, but you can bet there will be. I would bet on it. Thats what I was talking about.

Distances feel too short?  The problem is all fields are a pretty fair distance.  If you want more altitude before arriving over a field, you just have to move to a farther field.  You have that option, so dont complain about not being high enough. Moving to a close field isnt an option if none are close.

I have flown all the fighters in the game, I dont have to "go try flying a spit against a 51" or any such thing.  Right now this game favors the high speed high altitude fighters and favors them by a long way.

The wind sounds are not sufficient yet, and I have turned them up all the way.  And buffet approaching compression is negligible.  I have snapped off flight controls and even wings without any warning that I was that fast.  During a good fight, I dont have time to watch the gauges, I am watching the enemy as I maneuver. Remember the adage "lose sight, lose the fight".

"What if the guy who made most damage, didn't do enough to drop the plane? Maybe chew rudder, elevator, aileron... then one guy snaps his stab and gets assist for his kill?"

Well consider this, you shoot the plane to heck, he is limping home when you crash. Someone else pings him one time, minor hit, but enough to finish him.  He gets the kill and you get squat.  Does that sound better than you getting the kill and he gets an assist?  I dont think so.  Just because you died I dont think the damage you did to the enemy aircraft should be negated.

Come on guys, think into the future, anticipate the game development, offer ideas that the developers can consider as they change and improve the game.

I have seen enough blind defense of the developers in Warbirds in the past it made me want to vomit. I am not attacking the game or its developers, I am giving them feedback and suggestions from a players standpoint.

Aces High is quite a product, best of all is the cost structure that it will be charging.
If we all discuss the current state of the game and make suggestion that can be considered in the future, we can possibly have a hand in helping to shape the game into what we would like it to be.

Dago, I've jacked up my wind sound to give me speed cues.  I took the wind.wav file and opened it with sound recorder, then increased the volume a few times, and saved it.  The roar helps in avoiding compression.  I don't know if it's right for a WW2 fighter (never rode in one), but the wind noise is certainly very prominent on a lot of the prop aircraft I have ridden in.

It would be nice to have a nonlinear wind noise increase.  I.e. make it increase with the cube of IAS or something.

I'll take that bet on otto.  The current gunner system is WAY better than otto, and I can't see why it would be changed.  Some players complain about buff defenses, but I have a lot of fun trying to kill them.  At least I have someone to congratulate when I fail -- which isn't all that often.

Alright, no OTTO!

Maybe more gunners can sign on to a particular B-17?

Perhaps 2-3 gunners to a B-17.  Can it be done?

What ever it is, it would be better than OTTO.  If OTTO would be as half as accurate as that damn ack.  YUK!!

Man,  I hate ack!!!    No.

I really hate ack!!!!

Ack pretty much sucks!  I mean it's good, real good!  But it sucks!!

I do know that multiple human gunners on a buff is possible. It was done in AW and I'm looking forward to having it here. Hopefully it will be implemented soon and then those -1Cs won't be quite so quick to attack a bomber
