Campaign Maps
« on: October 19, 2008, 10:56:41 PM »
Those who have seen the FSO orders I produce
have no doubt noticed that I strive for a
historical feel.  I believe that producing a
mission order that has that feel adds to the
immersion factor.

One of the things that always frustrated me
when I was tasked to produce the orders
as CiC was the availability of maps.

I am wondering if someone could either send me
or direct me to where I can get good, high
resolution BMPs or other bitmap art of the
maps in use in the SEA for past and current
scenarios.

I'd like to have them all available to me so that
I can create the highest quality documents I
can.  Having to request maps and get them at the
last minute has really frustrated my efforts in
this regard.

Anyway, I'd like to compile a library of these maps
so that I will have them in advance of any scenario.

Hope you guys can help.
Once I get them, I will put them on my server and
make them available to others who are equally eager
to use them to fullest advantage when crafting
orders (if that is permissible).

Thanks for the help!

David

Heya David,
The Terrain Team does create a stratmap for <almost> every map we have. Although the general community has never really asked for them before, there's no reason that they can't be published and available to the community. I'll talk to our web gurus about perhaps setting aside some webspace on AHEvents.

These maps are 2048x2048 and pixel-based... so I'm not sure if they fit your definition of "high-resolution" or not.

In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail me or PM me about any specific stratmap you need... I'll happily send one along.

ps. Thanks for the offer of your server. Ideally we should keep them on an official events server, just for convenience sake. That way updates can be handled better, and version control won't be an issue.

That would be great...there was a thread the other week asking for this.  The best we could come up with was to max the clipboard and take screenshots to stitch together in Photoshop or some paint program.

Thats a great idea, thanks Dux.

Dux,

2048x2048 resolution is high enough!   :O

Thanks for considering the request. :)

Is it possible to have each map sent out with the objectives?

We could do that as standard procedure... some CMs already do, IIRC.

I concur.  I have had the same issue in the past as well when the 325th VFG publishes its orders.  Not having the best quality maps at times slows down the process.  Would be great to have a location for the squad planners to go to for the downloads.  I would not apposed to having a login ID and password either for access if that would add some control measures to it.

For whats its worth:  In some scenario's 2 map sheets are needed.  1 for the overall campaign so that everyone involved understands the "Big picture" and a tactical mapsheet for routes, coordinates and detail.  The Japan mapsheet comes to mind as an example of a very large mapsheet without a tactical mapsheet, as I remember.

As a suggestion and if would help the Setup CM's:  If there were also a upload feature those of us out here that have the capability to find maps or would make updates or improvements we would be able to and send them in.  Our way of helping out a little here and there.

I like the idea of a map vault.

While we are talking about this,

Does anyone have a copy of the TAGMA map I can get?
I have OZKANSAS as a zip file with various maps (with icons,
plain, different sizes, etc.).  Something like that for TAGMA
would be greatly appreciated!

Really hoping for a Vault Map!   :pray

TAGMA is an MA map, isn't it? MA maps are not built by the CMs and we don't have the source files to generate stratmaps like we do for our own maps. You'll have to search another route for that, unfortunately. :(

Back to the other issue, I'm looking into getting SEA terrain stratmaps posted on the Wiki... seems like the best option for everyone so far. I'll keep you posted on that process.

And yes... we would gladly accept any specialized map artwork that players want to submit, as long as they're accurate and readable. :aok
