Bf 109E-3 and I-16 Rata (Pics inside)
« on: October 22, 2008, 01:32:09 AM »
Took a trip to Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection last weekend. They were flying his 109 and I-16.  :rock

I took more pictures inside the hangar of his other planes. I'll upload those later.

Thanks!
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

I don't know, but Wikipedia says:

Quote
Due to the poor quality of the canopy glazing, the I-16 Type 5 pilots typically left the canopy open or removed the rear portion completely.

The canopy tended to become fouled with engine oil and the moving portion was prone to slamming shut during hard maneuvers which caused many pilots to fix it in the open position.

The one I took pictures of is supposed to be a Type 24.

They were built in high wing, low wing, open canopy, closed canopy and two seat trainer variations.

Wow, i noticed the 109 had the nazi swastika on the tail. Pretty rare. I dont think ive seen any of the other restored German A/C with the swastika tail marking. I could be wrong though. Great pics  :salute

Almost all restored German aircraft I've seen have the swastika.  Even Germany doesn't ban them in that context.

Flugwerk FWs don't have swastikas, though. Somehow it is symbolic too. In a way those recreated technological achievements are now free of the burden that created them in the first place. But abroad the tail swastika is part of history of the restored aircraft itself so it is a bit different matter.

IIRC During the WW2 some units of LW painted over the swastikas in protest to Nazi regime (Galland involved?). So obviously the marking had some meaning to the pilots, although I have never read of how the pilots felt flying with swastika painted on their aircraft if their political view was not sympathetic to "cause". But a paint job is probably not a big deal individually if the survival itself is unsure...

Is that why in some pics of Late WW2 German planes they have a Diamond on the tail?

JG53. Early in the war, the Geschwaderkommandeur (SP?) married a jewish woman. As punishment for that, they were ordered to paint a "Red Badge of Shame" over their Geschwader emblem. As a result, they also painted over their swastikas in protest. A Bf-109E skin I did (A LONG time ago) with that red badge of shame was just accepted into the game.
