It is either spyware, malware, or a virus.  There are many tools available to deal with these problems.  Someone who has had the chance to use such tools will probably be along to make a suggestion.

Try Adaware for spyware/malware.

The above is not an endorsement of product.  I have not used it and have only read about it.  It may not be the best thing around.  I have no idea.

Glock,

Tuning your computer is like changing the oil and tuning your car up. If you never change oil or spark plugs your car will eventually start running bad then eventually not run at all.

I know this may take a long time but it is important to start cleaning it up. Start deleteing files you do not need. Delete any programs you do not use through add/remove programs. Run anti-virus and get adware. Defragment your computer. These are some tips I hope helps.

I don't have a lot on my desktop but my brother and my dad got a whole crap load.

I remember sharing a computer with my family...  it's just not good, your having a problem now and in order to fix it you need their cooperation (or risk pissing them off).  Especialy if it's working "fine" for everything they're doing, they're even more likely to tell you to leave it alone.  Explain your situation to them, tell them what you think needs to be done to resolve the problem and hopefuly they'll at least help by cleaning up their own stuff or give you permision and talk to you about what to keep and what to nuke for them so you can just go at it ASAP.

Remember, pitch it so that they see you as fixing the computer for everyone, and not as you trying to mess around with their stuff for your benefit or trying to take control of the computer away from them... and try to get your own PC, even from any left over parts you can get your hands on (it might not be cutting edge, but it will work and depending on how you take care of it can work well and beter than a cutting edge machine not taken care of well).

music, video files in ngeneral ntake a lot of hard drive space. Programs will slow processor down. I am willing to bet if you go to task manager via ctr/alt/del and go to processses tab you have massive processes running if family uses computer. Let us know! GL :lol

My suggestions ~

Use Mozilla Firefox vs MS IE as a browser.
Grab the freeware downloads of AdAware and Spybot and run them weekly.
Grab the freeware version of AVG. It will run in the background 24/7 unless you disable it which is suggested when running AHII
Defrag at least once @ month.

And here's a biggie...if you get a screen warning saying some program you've never heard of has identified numerous infections, trojans, bugs etc. and is prompting you to run its program to remove the problems, STOP. It's likely to be a malware program. Malware is extremely difficult to cull out of your system once it's there...and you're the one who gets tricked into putting it THERE. Boot up the task manager (cntrl+alt+delete) and shut down your browser, making a note of the name of the program that popped up out of nowhere. Reboot your browser and Google the name. Follow the links and suggestions as to how to best proceed.
