Hard drive showing incorrect amount of space?
« on: October 28, 2008, 09:02:26 PM »
Hi guys -

I was going thru and cleaning up my main HD.  Its a 60 Gig, partitioned into two sections.  The c: is 40GB and the d: is the remainging 20GB.  If I do a properties inquiry on the d:, it says 12 GB free, 8GB used.  If I tally up my directories on the d:, it only totals up 2GB.  Where is the other 6GB?  I've got the hidden file folders turned on in the options and I'm not seeing any hidden files.

Does anyone know what might be going on here or is my HD starting to crap out?  Any help is appreciated.

System restore eats a lot of space. If you want to reclaim the space, disable system restore.

Would hafta agree on this one.

System restore eats a lot of space. If you want to reclaim the space, disable system restore.

I know with mine I have a 160GB HDD, and I allow it to use 12% (max allowed) of space for System restore.  That is 18GB that System restore is using there.  On my 320GB HDD i have the same 12%, that's 36GB used there.
With 480Gb of space I obviously don't need it all so I can afford those 54GB for Restore.  I would say just turn the amount of space allowed for System Restore down, or as said off (not necessarily a good idea).  With a 60GB HDD that is 7.2GB for Restore at 12%.

So, if I disable the sytem restore, is there a file that I need to manually delete or does changing that setting take care of that automatically?

Thanks!!

It deletes all restore points automatically. You can turn it on again after that and set amount of space used by system restore. If you're not installing and uninstalling, or changing configuration a lot, 2-3% of space will be plenty (as opposed to default settings).
