ATI TRAY TOOLS

I've searched, and haven't really seen anything concerning this program, mostly nvidea stuff.

I recently upgraded to a radeon 3870 pcie card from an x850 pro agp, and i'd like to clear some things up.

Basically what the * options do, or what the best settings are "related to Aces High II"

Version 1.6.9.1369

My selected settings will be in ( ).

Anti Aliasing -  x2 - (X4) - x8 - Application controlled
*Filter (Box) -  Don't know what the difference is between wide-tent, narrow-tent, or edge detect. I think edge detect doubles or triples whatever setting you have.

*Adaptive anti-aliasing
-Enabled-
SS Mode - (Quality) or Performance
MS Mode - (0 Smooth) - Don't know what 1, 2, or 3 do.

Aniostropic Filtering Optimization - (NOT Enabled)

Aniosotropic Filtering - Application Controlled

*Support DXT texture format - (Enabled)

*Support Bump Mapping - (Enabled)

*Alternate Pixel Centers - (NOT Enabled)

*Trilinear Filtering Optimization (Enabled)

*Geometry Instancing - (Enabled)

*Temporal AA -
  Multiplier - (Disabled)

Texture Preference - High Performance - Performance - Quality - (High Quality)

MipMap Detail Level - High Performance - Performance - Quality - (High Quality)

Don't recall what my settings are off hand (currently in a hotel room on my laptop) but I highly recommend that you turn off Catalyst AI.  Yes, it is supposed to optimize your ATI card for better performance but it does so by disabling some DirectX graphic features to get that increased frame rate and performance.

Why would i want to download and switch to riva tuner, which is geared towards nvidea cards, when i already  use ati tray tools which is made for ATI cards? I've used ati tray tools for a couple of years now, with the x850 pro, and now 3870,  with no problems.

Speed, check THIS THREAD out. Homeboy was looking to optimize his setup and it turned into a group going over a bunch of the settings.

Fugitive, that was the first one i read, but it's also more nvidea oriented., thanks.

 Ok i found that:

 *Adaptive anti-aliasing* = same as nvidea transparency. Seems to makes textures look more smooth, and realistic.
 
 *Geometry Instancing - (Enabled) = copies a certain texture, like trees, or grass, rendering them quicker.

*Temporal AA -
  Multiplier - (now Enabled) = Looks like it somehow doubles your AA setting and ties it in to your v-sync refresh rate, without messing with fps.

These are still up in the air.

*Support DXT texture format - (Enabled)

*Alternate Pixel Centers - (NOT Enabled)

*Support Bump Mapping - (Enabled) = seems that it ads texture to an object.  Don't know if AHII supports this though.

Speed it works the same with ATI. You can overclolck, control fan speed and adjust settings. A lot of gamers use riva.

I appreciate it,  and Thanks, but they are NOT the same thing.   

I think you're missing the whole point.  I actually like Tray Tools, and have been using it for a while. I am just trying to find out if anyone knows how or if a couple of the options effect the GAME.

Think of it this way. I bought a 72 duster, and changed the carb. I want to know the best way to adjust the idle mixture.
Here comes the drdeath remedy. Buy a fuel injected car.  :lol   How does that help me?  It doesn't. Understand now???

No ATITOOL will not affect game play in AHII, the game is not actually all that demanding on a system.  If this were Crysis, Knights of the Sea, Bioshock or World in Conflict something along those lines that put most systems to a crawl yes you could benefit but AH nope, no Sir.  IF you want to see i any of your tweeking is of benefit, benchmark it is the only way to actually see.

Actually TilDeath, different games place different demands on video cards.  Aces High II is fill-rate limited, where the performance of the game is directly tied to the fill-rate of the video card.

Other games performance may be tied to shader performance.

Other games may be tied to triangle perforamance.

Memory performance, of a video card, will have an effect in Aces High II as well.

All that said, Aces High II is also very CPU dependent due to the flight model calculations.  If the CPU is not fast enough, the performance of the video card will have little to no impact on the game performance.

I am not big on 3DMark as a test of a system due to how it leverages the systems resources.  It is more video card intensive than CPU intensive.  For what it is, it is fine, but it really will not give you a measurement of how Aces High II would run on a computer, given its focus on the video card, over the CPU.

As a matter of fact, of Aces High II is your primary game, 3DMark could actually lead you to build the wrong system.  Aces High II leans more on the CPU than the video card due to the physics calculations being done.

Just FYI.


Back to the discussion, ATI Tray Tools is far better tool for ATI cards than RivaTuner is.  As with any utility in the freeware category, I am concerned about how much longer it will continue to be supported.  He used to hae a new version within weeks of a new ATI card family being available, but that has seemed to slow.

Agreed Skuzzy but he asked about Video Card Tweeking which I stated will notaffect the game play.  I he did do tweeking 3DMARK would show his advancements or fall backs if any.  Again I think I live in a different world here even with the basic systems I build run AHII in furballs with HiRes at 59 or 60FPS.  If you want to crush a CPU then OCCT will tell you in your dialed in or not.

Thanks, that's pretty much what i wanted to know. 

I'm running e6400 2.14ghz c2duo, radeon 3870 512mb, and 2 gigs of ram.   xp home sp3.

Not the top of the line, balls to the wall screaming system, but it's good enough for me.

Everything is running fine at hi res, and sliders maxed, pre-load textures only, and other plane skins enabled (i think i have 16 of my favorites in there).

RivaTuner isn't all that great for tweaking ATI cards and all ATI related tweaks are low level driver side tweaks.  If you're using an ATI card, the only reason to use Riva Tuner is for the fan speed controller options. 

If you want to tweak your ATI card, the best program for that is ATI Tray Tools.

Regardless of what the opinion of 'extreme gamers' is, the fact of the matter is Ack-Ack is quite right.  No opinion is needed.  'ATI Tray Tools' does far more for ATI cards than 'Riva Tuner' ever has.

Riva Tuner is great for NVidia cards.
