Don't try to watch him all the time, but every time you change direction, hold that turn till you see him follow.
Once he's committed, reverse back the other way. You can flick forward for that.
Kind of like bringing in a basketball, when they are actively guarding. Fake left, guard comes left, fake right, wait till he starts to come right then go left. Your using his delayed reaction time to get him out of phase.
The dangerous part is if he stays in the middle and doesn't commit, but just slows down to stay in reach.
