The night started off great. ROC and I were each assigned a 262 to search for buffs, so the rest of the Nightmares could attack them with their 190s and 109s. We found them as they approached A168. Higher A20s and lower B26s. All escorted by a large force of P38s,47s and 51s.
We attacked, I nibbled with 3-4 passes apparantly killing one before running out of ammo(didnt know it at the time) and having to rtb. Our squad were handled pretty rough by the allied fighters and many died trying to bring down the buffs. I was disappointed in my gunnery, but was glad I made a few passes and lived. Something I rarely do in a 262 attack on bombers.
I re-armed and headed out again. I wanted to find the bombers that breezed through to our base and caused so much damage. Thinking that I was out of luck, that they were too far ahead and well on their way back to base, I chose 2 enemy bases where if I were a bomber would land.
The first base I came up empty, eluding a couple of enemy fighters I headed to A70. As I looked down I saw 1 set of buffs on approach to land. I dove in. As Im nursing the speed to keep from compressing, I look to the far end of the base.
JACKPOT!
In a split second I try to decide to trun on the film. Everytime I do, on the first flight,it freezes for a couple of seconds. Diving in at 450 or so I was afraid I'd auger and wake up dead in a plywood bed six feet from the rest of my life (Anthrax
I decide to risk it...it was just to cool not to try. What happened next was some of the most brutal destruction I have committed in the game to date.
I always dreamed of finding a squad on the re-arm and just hosing away. Its happened to us before and I had wished I was that pilot to be so lucky. Well tonight I was that pilot. It happened very quickly. The explosions and debris glorious to behold!
I ran out of ammo after 3 passes, and managed to get home on one engine. What a night!
The rest of the FSO was fun too with the capture and defense of 231. Great job in the design and running of this FSO. Thanks!
