You asked for WWII structures in my area... this is the closest one to my appartment. 5mins away with bicycle. Guess it's function ;)




(No, that woman isn't the "structure" I'm talking about :P)

I see a small opening on the side there, is it the entrance to some sort of underground bunker system?  Are there any openings on the part we don't see?

i've got plenty of pictures from my many trips to norway of bunkers and pill boxes from WWII, even found shell casings a few times, i'll try and find them

It is indeed a one man bunker, a "Luftschutz-Splitterschutzzelle".

This bicycle way was formerly an industrial railroad track, the "Erzbahn", starting at the Rhein-Ruhr canal in Gelsenkirchen and transporting iron ore to the blast furnaces to the Bochumer Verein. That kind of small shelters, big enough only for a man (or maybe two), were built to provide cover for those men working on or at the track in case of an air raid. The two I found still standing have been placed at at railroad switches.

Some how I don't think railway company's today would take such good care of the employees.  :D
