Could you find it in the DX panel?

(run: dxdiag then go to the sound panel)

I thought Microsoft had gotten rid of the hardware acceleration control for sound in Vista (DX10) as all sound now plays through the normal Windows sound subsystem.  There is no "DirectSound" functionality in Vista.

If you are running DX9 under XP, then you control the sound hardware acceleration via DXDIAG under the "Sound" tab.

Yes, the sound subsystem in Vista is completely borked.  Unless you are willing to do some extensive registry hacks, Vista's sound mapper WILL always alter the actual sounds being played.  You cannot record or playback any sounds in Vista without it being altered.

Can you explain that one to me, Skuzzy? Does the quality of the sound change as Vista sees fit or does it scale it by monitoring the performance of the hardware it is install on?

I'm trying to edumacate myself about Vista.

edit: Skuzzy, you said this in the e-mail support section.

Yes, we are and they will not fix it.  Well to be fair, they refuse to acknowledge there is a problem.  If there is, it must be us.  It simply cannot be them.

You know the drill.

On Vista's sound quality.  The mapper/router in Vista scales the sound to be able to keep up with the data stream.  It is dynamic.  The problem with Vista is they have too much going on all the time, so it cannot keep up with the audio stream.  For low quality MP3's, you will not notice it.

Try playing any HD audio through a decent audio system and listen to the CD of the same song, at the same time.  The two playbacks will never finish at exactly the same time.

It really gets ugly when you are using an onboard audio device.  It can lose seconds of audio, in one song.
