3 What if's
« on: December 23, 2008, 08:41:38 AM »
Was trying to take a base but long story short it ended up with me in a Spit 16 v 2x Spit 16 + 1 x IL-2.

Having shot down both Spits the IL-2 was remaining.  What should the IL-2 have done and guess what really happened.

1) Stay in and fight.

2) Try and run to ack while the dead friendlies came to the rescue.

3) Bail the moment my Spit had a chance of getting guns.

One would hope he might try #1, but most in AH do #2, I think he might have done #3

Though its lame (if he bailed), does it really matter? You got your kill anyway.

Plenty of shame in #2.  He wouldn't lose anything if gets shot down, he'll just get another plane.

#3 is about the only thing wussier (if thats even a word) than #2.

Let's put it this way then.  I'd still mock him for choosing #2 or #3.

I cant immagine any one would want to bail and miss a good chance of winning the fight.
Not everyone on your six kills you. If they do one needs to be more open to things like turning the aircraft etc.
Sadly, I think I know how this story ended.

I personally would not blame him for choosing number 2. The IL2 is barely maneuverable, doesn't accelerate well, doesn't climb worth a damn, and the only real firepower it has is in the nose with the cannons. Most IL2's I have come acrossed and even when I fly them are on the deck which leaves you almost no option except trying to turn with him. Anything else will end in him catching you and shooting your tail off.

Now 3 I think is a little lame and would not do that in those circumstances, If I am going to be shot down I would rather have it happen while trying not to.

That being said I would fight but that is because most times I like to fly against losing odds. One time I killed a KI84 and an F4U1D in a single sortie with an IL2. Yes they were very tardy and I am sure the F4U was unaware that I was there until the rounds flew over his canopy.

As a guess though I will take it that he bailed without even an attempt.

Knowing how low the standards are in the MA these days, I'd say, he tried for a HO, missed, then went to #2 and then when the game was up he went to #3

Well, that's your opinion.  Personally, I like it when my opponents make it a challenge to shoot them down.  Using AAA to your advantage is good combat tactics in an Il-2, and sometimes in a fighter, too.  Sure, I say "ack-hugger" sometimes when I see someone do it, but I would get bored quickly if every opponent gave me an easy shoot down when I arrive with an advantage over their own airbase, or if I make a mistake and don't shoot them down as quickly as I should (they run to AAA).  If you don't like dealing with AAA, don't try to shoot people down over their own airbase.  It's pretty simple.  So, no, I don't see any shame in it.
