Engine oil damage too frequent?
« on: August 10, 2000, 07:02:00 PM »
I've just been noticing, that I take damage to my engine oil as all the other damageable parts combined. What gives? It's not like the oil cooling equipment is bigger than say.. the radiator or fuel tanks, but it gets nailed much more frequently. Maybe tone it down just a bit, please???

I agree funked, what plane?  The Spit has a problem with losing the oil or rad easily.  De-Acking in a Spit just means you get to have your engine shot out.  It depends on the plane, some seem more likely to get rad hits than others.

N1K, but I'm not sure I'm getting my point across. My oil is the only damage my plane take 2 out 3 times. I mean they spray my airplane w/ lead and it all just seeks my oil cooler? I haven't experienced anything like this in other planes, they seem to distibute the damage a little more realistically.

Maybe N1K2 really isnt that tough as I thought and bullets goes through whole plane when hit... (through rear till engine blocks bullet?  )

Well the Spit losing oil and coolant makes sense.  Like the P-51 and Me 109, it has the oil cooler and radiator hanging out in the open under the belly.  In this position it is easily hit from the rear, bottom, sides, or front.

However the N1K2 has the oil cooler (correct me if I'm wrong) under the nose.  It's not hanging out in the breeze like on the wimpy inline planes.  Fw 190 and P-47D also have the oil cooler close to this position.  Seems like it would be hard to hit the oil cooler unless you were firing from the front, or underneath.

However keep in mind that oil coolers are pretty fragile items.  All it takes is one nick of the cooler or it's supply and return lines, and your engine's lifeblood is spraying into the wind...
