Overclocker noob seeks help
« on: January 03, 2009, 10:55:20 AM »
Last year I built a computer around:
Abit IP35 Pro mobo
Intel Core 2Duo Conroe E6850 3.0 GHz CPU
Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC2 6400 ram.

The mobo shipped with a uGuru utility that monitors fans, voltage, temp, etc and allows for some OC tweaking. There are also some preloaded extclock setting which range: 334, 348 and 358 MHz. I was told that 400 MHz is a stock clock speed so I used the utility slider to increase to that number. System is noticeably faster now. Trouble is that's the extent of my OC knowledge. I've Googled up a number of websites but even the more basic "how to's" seem technically challenging to me.

Bottom line, I've read that the E6850 can be easily clocked to 4.0 GHz. Can anyone lend me a hand or point me to some "beginner" OC info?

Thanks

Karaya gave this to me yesterday. (Thanks Karaya) Overclockers.com The answers you seek are probably there.

Good luck!

Max,  first things first.  Turn off Intel Speedstep and the CPU throttlers (C1E advanced halt state, etc... there should be three of them) and disable the Spread Spectrum settings.  Next Link and Sych your RAM to the CPU.  This will keep the bus clocks the same.

Now you're ready to OC the CPU.  Raise the CPU bus clock (or FSB depending on your motherboard) in small increments until you can no longer boot or are unstable once booted.  From there increase the CPU core voltage in incerments of 2-3 until you can boot stabally, then back it down one increment at a time until it's unstable again, then move it back up one.

At this point run Prime95 or Orthos for at least fifteen minutes which will put 100% load on your CPU monitoring temps.  If your CPU core temps are still fine then bump the CPU core clock up a bit and repeat the process above.

When temps are finally getting too high back everything back to your last stable setting and run Prime95/Orthos for an extended period (at least an hour... preferably more) monitering temps to make sure all is well and that the system is stable.

You may reach a point where no CPU voltage increase makes the system stable.  In this case you've probably raised the RAM bus clock above it's recommended settings and will likey need to loosen the RAM timings or possibly even raise the RAM voltage to re-gain stability (loosen timings first... don't touch RAM voltage unless you absolutely have to).

Unfortunately, to do this right no one can tell you what settings to use as every system is different.  It's a slow and tedious trial and error process.

Good luck.

BaldEagl just that one sentence alone leave me clueless. I don't even know where to begin turning off Speedtep and CPU throttlers.

All of this is in the BIOS.  You'll have to search for it there as all motherboards have their own BIOS set-ups.

I overclocked an athlon64 4000+ Clawhammer.

I had water cooling so it wasn't a problem.  It worked also.

Using an ASUS mobo that would overclock in % increments made it easy (in BIOS)

but...even though it worked it does shorten the lifespan of the cpu.

My advice.....don't OC unless you need to or you have a throwaway PC.  :)

Need to register in the forum and post a specific question.  This is my site, its new, so there is not a ton of info posted yet.  It is run by BrianY (ranked in the 40's), ChrisM (ranked in the 20's) and myself (ranked in the 60's).  All three of us are world ranked Overclockers.

Tomshardware.com forums have some excellent threads on the basics and essential guides on overclocking (especially with the C2D series).  When I first OC'd my current system I referred to their threads there.

Who does the overclock rating?

Who does the overclock rating?
I will post the link Monday, yes I am a goof and it is not on my laptop at home.  How the rating system works is this, its a combination of what components, how much you OCed it with validations (CPU-Z, GPU-Z, 3DMark06, Vantage etc.  For instance someone with very deep pockets does not get the higest rating just because he can buy the most expensive MB, MEM, CPU etc.  It done by your achievements, like a Q6600 to XGHz and 800 FSB running stable at 1840 FSB etc etc.  Its our peers, the scores, etc all collectively put together.  We also gather for competitions etc world wide.  Sent myself an email to post the site.
