This Map Resets Too Quickly
« on: January 08, 2009, 09:46:26 AM »

The terrain features on this map are some of the best in the game.  It's also a small map that does a great job of funneling the action to a narrow width of sectors, so there's not much toolsheding to be done and you can quickly find a fight.

Now, the negative point is that this map never lasts a day before there's a reset, and it's easy to see why: One way gv spawns from the vbases in the mountains to the supporting airfields.  Capture the enemy v-base and they will have to mount a recapture with a C-47, which significantly lowers the chance of success.

Asymmetrical spawns are a clever idea, and work well on a large map like Trinity, but on a small map they cause too much imbalance and make for a quick reset.  If additional spawn points were added to make all spawns symmetrical the map would last bit longer before a reset.  Thank you. ;)

Good observation and I agree that this is one of my favorite maps to see when I log in.  It's so small that there will be action wherever you fly.

I've always wanted to see some hard guns mounted on the top edges of the canyons in the mountains.  That way I could scream "Your all clear kid, now let's blow this thing and go home!" when I shoot down into the canyon to clear a low buff while tracers shoot off the canyon rim at us.

Everything.

The terrain itself is completely arbitrary, with sheer 10k cliffs and 10k vertical valleys cut into the mountains by the GV bases.

The GV bases are all right next to each other, but you only have 5 airfields per side. None of them are very conducive to an air war. If you lose any one field, it is almost impossible and takes forever to get there to try to retake it. The general spacings are just.... inefficient. Not to mention the corners have all that unused space.

Also, there's never really a "front line" -- you just get slammed everywhere. You can't up from a rear field because your fields are all at the front most of the time.

It's a map I log out of when I see it's on. I go to the other LW arena and avoid it.

Somebody wasn't Bish yesterday......   :lol

I think you make some really good points, but at the same time remember that other smaller maps reset just as fast.  I think it really comes down to size more then it does base setup.

Not my favorite map but had some fun in there. ENY went to 29 at one point and the only thing I could fly was a crop duster.

but you only have 5 airfields per side.

I've heard your bad at math.  Maybe it's just a counting problem.

8 per side.   :aok

I respectfully disagree!  The other small maps usually last at least 24 hours before a reset.  This one seems to reset in less than 12.  Yes, small maps reset quickly, but this one is the extreme example.

Symmetrical gv spawns would make a difference!

I am usually glad to see this map reset as well. It's size does indeed make it easier to find a fight, but I think it makes those fights a little too big. I think this is mostly because of the lack of area to create a front.

On the other hand I love fighting in canyons. It does increase the challenge to not only fighting an opponent but also the terrain itself. Nothing like starting to get the upper hand on an enemy to find yourself going into the canyon walls.  :rofl

Just my take on this map. If the map were laid out the same (generally speaking) but larger with more bases, I think the map would be loads more fun and solve the rapid reset issue you describe.

I tend to agree though there should be more symmetric spawns than not.

dont like that map for 2 reasons..

1: thos lusche mentioned

2: whenever its in one arena, the other arena gets REALLY hard to get into, giving the impression that alot of people dont like it..

for example when it was in blue the other day the arenas were

Orange:  305/300

Blue:  95/350

or something to that effect.

If only 95 were in blue the cap on Orange would be lower actually.  I don't think the arena balancing will let that happen.

You need to reread Snailman's post.  He didn't give any reasons...or do you mean that you don't like it because Snailman said he doesn't like it. :P

We all have maps that we like and dislike.  I'm not too concerned about changing anyone's opinion on this one, but do we all agree that the spawns should be symmetrical?

I cannot believe no one has commented on this yet.  I almost broke my coffee mug at the office when I read that  :rofl

Question though -- why did they have to go down that long trench?  It didn't really seem to taper down, and it was wide enough to pull out of at the end...

I felt the same way in a different map a few months ago.  I had 3 spit-tards chasing my 109 down a real narrow canyon (surprised?) and actually said out loud, (which confused the hell out of my girlfriend)  "the guns, they've stopped" :D
