Steam Hardware Survey
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:46:31 PM »
I always like to check this out from time to time as it gives a good cross section of what kind of hardware is out there across multiple games.
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

CPU's
Intel Processors: 64.65%
AMD Processors: 35.33%

Cores
1 Core: 37.74%
2 Cores: 50.81%
4 Cores: 10.76%

OS
Windows XP 32: 67.18%
Windows XP 64: 0.25%
Windows Vista 32: 23.92%
Windows Vista 64: 7.53%
Windows 2000: 0.28%

RAM:
58.61% have 2gb of Ram or more

Top 5 DirectX 10 GPUs:
Nvidia 8800: 24.58%
Nvidia 8600: 16.21%
ATI 48xx: 7.09%
Nvidia 9800: 6.06%
Nvidia 9600: 5.96%

SLI Crossfire:
2 SLI: 1.56%
3 SLI: 0.03%
4 SLI: 0.01%
Crossfire: 0.24%

Of course, there stats used to show the numbers of users as well as percentages.  And these stats are taken monthly and would apply to only active Steam users, though there are a total of over 15 million accounts, I'm quite sure that a few of those are not active for this survey.

A lot of gaming companies use this survey themselves, I know our company does.  It does give a good cross section of what hardware gamers are using the most.

Yep it goes to show that only a very small percentage of people are running right on the bleeding edge of the technology wave. I have known some people that can't stand being off the edge and some of their "used" systems were given away for 2/3 the cost of what they paid just a few months or weeks before. These guys are now no longer playing around with computers since they don't have the money any longer.

That's rather sad. I'm just dreaming of a system with a 9800 GTX or even a GTX 260. However to get that I would literally have to replace my entire system just to get it into a position to support those cards. However when I do finally have the money to get that computer, I most definitely would not chunk it to claim that I'm on the, "bleeding edge of technology."

I'd say my keeping this old system for 6 years would prove that.

My first build system (P3 800) was in 2000.  I replaced that in 2003 with a P4 2.8ghz.  And I replaced that in 2007 with a C2D E6400.  And I usually add/replace hardware on each system at least 2-3 times a year.

Heh... that's nothing.

PIII 600 Mhz
512K PC-100/PC-133 SRAM
32 Mb GForce MX 440
Soundblaste Live! Value
Win98

Purchased late 1997.  Retired from AH early 2008.  Still using it as my primary non-gaming/non-media computer.

Now:

2.66 Ghz Intel E6750 C2D
2 Gb DDR2 800 DDRAM
512K 8800 GTS
Creative X-Fi Gamer Fatality Pro
Win XP

What a step up.   :)

Nice! I had that same video card, except it had 256MB of memory. I upgraded my video card a few years back, it didn't do a whole lot for this system, though.

I went through 3 video cards this last 6 months (actually 4) 2 x 3870 (512) ATI,
4870 x 2 and Nvidea GTX 280. Had aggravating small problems with ATI. Luckily Fry's took em back and I tested a few others LOL.

Wow, I'd hate to be a piece of hardware entering your computer case. :D

Though it does look like he was using Krusty math, I think he's referring to the ATI HD 4870 x2 card which is actually a single video card.
