Problems with Nvidia 8400gs
« on: January 09, 2009, 08:54:44 PM »
Alright here we go. Just got a Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS 512MB graphics board and installed. When I start AH, it opens to the first clipboard and when I click on offline mission it launches in to tower then freezes. The images outside the tower start out in block fashion and an error to the effect of NV4 blah, blah, blah is messing up   save all data then reboot.  Basically I can't launch into game

Here is a DXdiag:

When you restarted the game after the swap, did the game "see" the new board? Did it rebuild the cache? If it didn't force it to by deleting the cache folder and it will rebuild a new one. Also, do you us a driver cleaner before you installed the new drivers for the new board?

I did look for the old drivers in the control panel but was unsure about the name of them.
I take it that there is a driver cleaner program out there somewhere

I did eventually delete the video8.cfg file a bunch of times, but it doesn't seem like it rebuilt it like it has in the past. I say that because before it told me that it would have to rebuild & this time after deleting it, it just loaded the stuff & went to the tower, where it would freeze :huh

This is Driver Sweeper. Its a shareware version of a driver cleaner. I'd set my video on the computer to VGA or what ever the instruction for install call for. Then run the sweeper program, select all video files it found. Then run it. It will delete all drivers, and reboot the computer (some reboot on their own, other you have to). When it reboots it should see the new video card and look for the drivers for it, or you could supply the disk.

The cache folder is C:\Program Files\HTC\Aces High II\cache on my computer. Mine was installed to the default location. If you delete this folder the game will regenerate a new one. Deleting the video8 file I think would reset your display properties to the new board I would think.

just a little update:  I deleted the cache folder like you guys have suggested, to no avail. :(

On the bright side, I am able to fly in the practice arena & did a couple of duels in the DA. It cost me though. I unchecked the 'Hardware vertex processing' box which also unchecks the 'optimize terrain' & 'optimize objects" boxes.  My framerate was really low, like 9-25. I was flying on 1280x1024, & changed to 1024x798. It made no difference in framerate but GAWD the textures were quit a bit different, so I went back to 1280x1024. Another thing to note so far about that setup, there were terrain tiles that were jittery and a line kept flashin on the canopy at about the 10 o'clock area(not looking around, had view straight ahead)

Also, please make sure you have updated drivers.
I am kinda assuming that the drivers that I loaded with the CD that came with it were updated ones.

What I was saying here
I did look for the old drivers in the control panel but was unsure about the name of them.
was that I could not find the old ATI 9200 pro drivers in the control panel/add or remove programs  list. I did find a thing online about using the command promt to run a program to detect hidden drivers and unistall them and I think it may have worked

Here is another bone to through out there the exact error message is;
"The nv4 display driver has stopped working normally."

Oh & by the way, I want to thank everyone for responding to this thread. I do appreciate it :salute

P.S. I have emailed the whole DXDiag to hitech support :rock

Have you tried getting rid of your drivers yet then reinstalling the drivers included with the video card? I recommend you use the drivers provided from the manufacturer, as they are typically more stable when it comes to NVIDIA.

The drivers that came with the CD are not necessarily the updated ones.  As previously suggested,  I recommend that you go to the card manufacturers web-site and download the current driver. :salute

Unless there's something that is absolutely not working with the drivers that came with the video card, don't use the latest drivers from NVIDIA. Typically they always have some form of issues. Usually the drivers that come with your video card are stable drivers that get the job done.

Solution; Took NVidia 8400GS back to store and got money back. Put original board(which I thought was 128mb, but turned out to be 256mb back in.  :rofl

Thank you very much to everyone that tried to help me :salute

PS. I think these NVidia's are made by Chevrolet, because if Ford had built them, they would have work right outta the package  :P :P :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :lol :lol
