Sarnia Imperials - "With all our Might"




Ok, for those that like to take holiday snaps while in combat  ;)

Spitfire FR IX MK290, coded 'U' of No. 414 Sqn RCAF, B.78, Eindoven, October, 1944.  Flown by F/L P. Brunelle DFC, from Montreal, Quebec.

Still a work in progress, I need to figure out how to make the camera window look more realistic...

Some reflection off the glass or draw a slight curve on the lense to make it look 3D?

Added some reflection (toned down), still experimenting with opacity, too much and it looks like a mirror, too little and the reflection effect doesn't show up...

Ok, I think this is better.  Played with the colours and added a bit more 3D shading.

I can't tell in the pics if you did it on the skin or not, but can the camera be seen behind the glass on the real birds? Maybe a black shape behind the glass to give it some more depth?

This would involve some compromising, If you want to see the lens inside then there couldn't be any reflection on the glass, so you'd lose that effect.

That makes it look better IMO, it looks less like an opaque glass lens than a covering over a camera that way. But I'm not familiar with photospits, would you be able to see that on a real one? Or was it too thick or tinted?

Maybe Guppy has some pics, the problem is this:  If you want the surface of the glass to be 'visible' you need a texture to represent some sort of reflection.  If the glass is reflecting light you won't be able to see through it very well.  However, if you want the interior of the camera bay (and camera) visible there can't be any reflection, and the 'glass' will look 2D or missing altogether depending on how much you can 'see' inside the bay.  With the access hatch shut there is going to be very little light inside the bay anyway and the contents will be hard to see under normal lighting conditions.  I would imagine you'd have to cup your hands on the glass and press your nose against it to really see anything inside.

Artist's profiles always seem to have some sort of highlight on the glass making it look curved, usually to give the impression that it's indeed a glass surface.  This is BS however, as the glass was optically flat so there wouldn't be any distortion.

I'm going to keep experimenting.

Hmm, I'd say go wit hthe reflection then. Looks like you wouldn't be able to see anything even if it was crystal clear.

I think this is pretty good.  Shows some colour for reflective properties and just a hint of a lens in there...

Could you change the pattern a lil bit? I don't think every spitfire had the exact same pattern.
