88mm Flak or PATRIOT missiles???
« Reply #15 on: January 09, 2001, 08:00:00 AM »
I had never had this happen tell last night. I flew over the enemy fleet at 22k (not even really knowing I was over it (my fault I guess) and the flak was more than bad, it was EXCELLENT! If that was the product of human gunners I. It was like guided missile flack. four bursts in a row and at least one ping each time. I had 2 wingman with me and all three of us went down after damn near pulling the wings off trying to avoid it. I will not only never fly near a CV again but if this is going to be the norm on the game I'm not going to pay for it. I was up to dog fight. I had no desire to be near the fleet other than to get from point A to point B to get into a fur ball. On top of that I was not even close to being directly over the fleet. I didn't find this out tell dropping 10k during evasives and spotting the fleet about 15k away (no kidding!). Thats over 3/4 of the max range of the best US 5" gun and it was firing at a target going 350mph (or more) doing evasive maneuvers! Even if the flack was that good IRL (and it was not) for playability can't we tone it down a bit. If it's a human gunner he's VERY good. With an enemy at 20k alt doing evasives I can't get the 5" guns to track that quick. I guess someone else can. Like I said it irritates me enough that I WILL cancel my subscription. I don't mind the flack (88mm) over the bases. I don't have any complaints about the 40mm low alt flak. BUT WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE BATTLESTAR GALACTICA FLACK AT THE CV! IT'S LIKE SOME DAMN 88mm MACHINE GUN WITH LASER GUIDANCE. If it's to prevent the bombers from easily bombing the CV it will defiantly do that! I was in a P-38 (and so were my wing men) and we were all over the sky trying to avoid it. Don't worry the fleet wont be bombed any more by some Lancaster or for that matter a any other plane trying to fly near it. I am not going to spend my time in the air (except of course if I'm attacking the CV) trying to make sure that the NME CV is no where within 20k of me while I'm flying. I've only had this occur last night and once was more than enough! Was it the new patch? If so I don't want to pay for that "upgrade". I will give this a week and if I don't hear someone say their addressing the issue I'm canceling. I'll put up with all kinds of little glitches in the playability but when it comes to this one I wont. If this is what they want it I'm sure they will have plenty of customers that think it's "cool" and I wont be missed but I will go. I can handle the lopsided odds that occur on occasion, the wicked fire from the bombers, and any number of things that put the odds against me but not the SUPER FLACK. I noticed someone mentioned that the fighters were effected by this the most. Now that I think about it I haven't flown over a CV in a bomber since the new patch nor have I flown over an 88mm deafened base with a fighter. So I'm not sure if I'm still ok with the 88's over the land bases. Maybe there just as bad!

Ease up guys, this is obviously not intentional.  Pyro already stated in the general forum that this was not an intentional change, and that they will be making a change on the host to try and fix it.

The HTC crew fixes bugs at amazing speed.  I'm sure they will get this one sorted out quickly as well.

Glad to hear HTC is on it.  That ack was insane.  Like Cita said, "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM!"  I was jinking & turning at 350-400IAS like an chog was on my six, and still taking hits!   Port ack is pretty bad too btw.

The only thing that seemed to shake it for a time was hard alt changes, but that's all.

i have had a helluva time since the patch with the 88s as well.  This morining while making a pointless run on undefended p14 i was shot down after only moments by the stuff.  I did manage to make 2 passes on the base however.  As i turned and levelled for my second pass, i was again nailed by the 88s.  I went to bomb site and there WAS ONE ACK UP ON THE FIELD.  Yet all around me 5 or 6 burts of flak every second. A few seconds later and before i could drop on the last ack i was killed, tore me right in half.  I was disgusted, i even got up and took a shower because i felt so violated.

my 23 cents

", i even got up and took a shower because i felt so violated."

LOL.

It would be cool to have tracking flak fire. Once they get your alt (say, the 6th salvo) then it would be ok to have something 60% as accurate as the flak there is now. But if you dive or climb it resets. This would be rather fair for fighters (who may get hit because they may fly into one of the flak puffs that "missed") and for bombers (no more loitering over field picking out targets for over half an hour).

In all, I know HTC would fix this, it was obviously something that killed gameplay. Im just happy to find out it was unintentional

I agree Tac, this doesn't even come close to WWII reality. We're talking about timed fuzes. Beside the fact that is was hard enough in that time to time the fuzes for the "correct" height, as soon as a bomber or plane formation changed altitude it took time to set the correct fuze time again. In AH almost every flag burst is at the correct altitude and you'll have to manoeuvre like freaking madman to avoid it, leaving you with absolutely no possibility to hit the target.

It's almost like being hit by end-ballistic-guided-ammunition with proximity fuzes.

The really sad part is that every single country is currently moving their CV close enough to the enemy base to shoot down all the defenders.  The 88s are really funny too, they will always shoot 5 bursts and 90% of the time the 5th will hit.

One thing I've noticed though is that the 88s fire in a straight line.  The 1st shot generally is behind you and the rest follow your flight vector exactly.  If you do an extreme manuver of some sort right as the first burst comes in, the 5th will usually miss or do very little damage.

I managed to sink the bish cv two times in this patch with a b26 by using this to my advantage.  (The second time Citibria hit me with a human ack right as I got the ship destroyed message.   )  Basically if you dive, and then turn when the first burst sounds, the 5th won't damage you much.
