CV next to airfields
« on: February 05, 2009, 10:48:33 PM »
Why are CVs ALWAYS directed to go straight to an airfield and get as close as possible?   Did the U.S.   go straight to the coast of Japan and say   hey look at us we are right here ready for u to sink us.  Just seems pointless to me.  but what do i know im a 'noob'

U.S. didn't get a fresh CV for each sunk one a few mins later ;)

Well, just in case your question isn't rhetorical..

The "game" carriers go right up to the shore, so very
vulnerable LVTs will have as short a trip as possible on
their way to the town/maproom.. Preferably they will
spawn "feet dry", so they dont have to waddle thru
the water at a snails pace, getting straffed by IL2's
and 110's..

In reality, an attack carrier wouldn't go ANYWHERE near
a hostile shore.. It would launch its attacks from over
the horizon, with its planes taking a dogleg course to
prevent revealing its true position...

If we had amphibious assault fleets, it wouldn't be an issue..
Maybe someday, we will!!!  The game needs it!!!

Our maps don't have even enough room to provide the distance the CV would stay away from enemy bases in reality.

Cozying a CV to a town is also needless.  Try it offline.  Jump a CV to 30K from a town.  Spawn an LWT2.  Try it at 15K from town.  Try it at 5K.

When I tried it at 16K moments ago, LWT2 spawned at same distace from town as when I was snuggled close to town.

For fun, pop into a SB at those distances to gauge effectiveness of SB fire.

Pretty revealing, eh?

BTW, Widewing years ago wrote a very fine essay on CV ops.  What I detail here, he took the time to find out a long time ago.

If the attackers bring down, in order of importance, Ords, VH, Shore guns, the CV is quite safe coming in.

Of course the reality is everyone is busy vulching and padding their scores. :huh

Also, being closer to the shore enables the 'big guns' on the cruiser to do some havoc on the field. Since nobody will direct fire from above, gunners will need a visual of where/what they're shoot :)

One reason ive noticed for keeping cv's close is the auto flak will fire on anything above 3000ft, this limits the effectivness of the vaunted la7's' spit16's, and N1k's that usualy make trouble for the slower climbing carrier born aircraft, byt forcing them down low.
Ive noticed because it infuriates me, and I start running b25'h's as soon as I recieve flak over the field...

It's not so much the auto-flak as it is the manned ack, which is laserguided!

Maybe you should request a new separate Task Force with LSTs, etc. for amphibious landings to compliment the existing Task Force for aerial operations.  :aok

CVs already can't have waypoints set that touch land. It shouldn't be too hard to adjust that code so the CV can't get closer than 25 miles from a base.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
