If you thought the P51 was Uber before .........
« on: December 29, 1999, 08:44:00 PM »
Wait till you try out 0.43.

Now that flap blowback is modelled at higher airspeed, do you realise that the P51 can now deploy 4 notches of flap before the 190 can even deploy 1 !.

P51 can drop 1 notch of flap up to 400 kias, while the 190 cannot drop flaps at all past about 170 kias.

I haven't checked out all the aircraft yet (F4U deploys 1st notch below 250 kias) but just watch the 51 rule the virtual skies now!

Were the LW flaps really so bad that there was this kind of disparity between the aircraft?  Reminds me of another sim not so far away

BTW HTC, is drag from a windmilling prop modelled in 0.43?

At least P-51D seems far more realistic now (muhaha, low speed capability..)
Though, I wish those flaps aren't any alien technology which gives it spitfire turning capability again...

Thats gone now fishu, the blackout LOC in quick now, a second or two after total blackout your fellow is relaxing his controls. The highest I could pull in the plane was about 7-8 G before my fellow relaxed. I was trying to get high enough to break the plane but no luck
Thus those 15 g UFO turns are history now.

I wish the N1K2-J had it's "auto-flaps"...   Or is it considered too dweebish for us to have it? How about the Kommandgerät on the Fw190 then?

Curly: ehh.. well, if 400mph is slow... and then can put even more flaps at 260mph.. doesnt sound like low speed to me

juzz, I believe those butterfly flaps are included in the modelling. Otherwise the Nik2 would not be even close to being as agile at low speed as it is.

I think your right Sorrow. If I remember correctly, Pyro said a long time ago that the automatic butterfly flaps were already "in the model", but wouldn't be visible to use in the game.

Last night I flew the 109, the P-51, the La-5fn, and the 190. To be honest I thought the La-5 was the hot performer in this version.

Maybe it is just me, but it seemed that ALL the planes were much more sluggish and slower to respond than in previous versions. This seemed to hit the 109 and the P-51 worst, in that order.

Anyone else notice this?

PS: Oh yeah did the fuel modifier change? I was flying around forever in the La5 last night without any fuel problems.

Vermillion: Bf109 climbs alot slower and Fw190 eats fuel now alot more (climbs to 20k, has only 20-25% fuel left, in previous version, 40-50%)

I don't know verm, we have a lower threshold for speed now, at 450 mph we get damage, only your Nik2 and the C47&B17 are that bad or worse. Meanwhile a 109,190 or p51 can do 600mph (I think 109 is actually 500mph in my test before things came unglued

But yes, I think we are the one least affected. I don't buy that 109 or 190 is more sluggish, hell my plane was out rolled by a F4u the other day!

But fuel modifier is the same. I still need a 1/4 tank to get to 20k and an 1/8 tank to 25k. Nothing different there, you must be living longer to appreciate the whole tank

F4U should be second-best rolling plane in set, after 190.

The one notch high speed flaps on the pony seem good to me.
This 450 damage is silly. 550-600 would be more like it. I've read to much on high speed dives in a 51 to belive it was limited. Maybe with drop tanks or ord on board.
Heck I know two JUG pilots that say they can top 500 without damage.(with lots of alt). My pilot friend said after the war, they tried to set the speed record in dive out in a 47, a few died trying, but couldn't beat the 51.
The 51's air frame was a lot better high speed design than the 47.

can hardly belive that you could drop flaps at that speed... the first notch of flaps produces mainly lift .. and at THAT speed the aerodynamic momentum must be awesome...
And what should dropping the flaps at 500 Kias be good for ? The radius of the turn is limited by the G that black you out anyways and the wing is EASILY able to produce that much G at that speed.

Mr ed, read the post, P51 has the highest tolerance. In my 3 quick tests they had no damage until almost 600 ias.

Sorrow can u explain the benefit of being able to deploy the 51s flaps a notch or two at high speeds?

Dotsie.
