I have the solution:

Disable Landing in the DA.

Air starts, no terrain.

Alternate idea: Seperate DA into Furball, and Dueling, 1 Arena for Furballs, with 3rd Person, Landing, Stats, etc. And a Dueling Arena, where its MA rules, Air Starts, and no fields.

Actually that is the fly in the ointment on this wish.  As it is now, if you disable "name in lights" in the arena setup, it also disables "you shot down ----"/"---- shot you down"

That would be fine, but I thought if you squelched channel 5 or 6 it would disable all landing message on your client? I forget if the channel is 5 or 6, one of them is landing messages and one is the <salute> channel.

If they allow you to squelch landing messages, it should be very easy to do it for everyone in the DA.

The Furball Lake is like a mini-MA. That's what bugs people about it. If you want to fly like the alt-monkeys, ho'ers, pickers, etc, then go where the alt-monkeys, ho'ers, pickers, etc are. Which is in the MA.

The Dueling Arena is supposed to be a place without any of the above.

Ciaphas, the point is, the "kills message standard" has led you to think that these guys are good sticks.  By and large they aren't.  In fact, they're amongst the absolute worst in this game.  Taking off at furball arena, climbing up to ensure you're always higher, taking the fastest plane with the best guns possible, attacking preoccupied enemies, and running whenever one's on your six, WILL MAKE YOU A TERRIBLE PILOT.

Yet for whatever reason, the landed-kills becomes the standard.  People like you think such players are "good."  You're probably as eager as anyone, and have asked them how to do it.  So eventually, you learn from them how to do it.  Now you can do the same things they do.  Now you can climb higher, take a faster plane with the best guns, attack preoccupied enemies, and "egress" when the situation gets "bad."  But now you're also a terrible pilot because you have mistakenly associated a certain style with "skill."

A few months later a new guy shows up and starts emulating you.  The cycle continues.  Soon enough, there are arenas full of people just like the first pilot you thought was "good."  It snowballs.  The gameplay gets worse and worse.

Great post.  Sums it up very nicely.

Try to look at it this way, you have some really good sticks in the DA

Ciaphas, there are no "really good sticks" in the DA furball pond.  If I can land 7 kill sorties in the P-40E there without rearming, then it's just laughable, because I'm nothing special.

You are hurting yourself if you remain there longer than what's required to learn gunnery skills, because target practice is all it's good for.  Occasionally you see people there who know a thing or two, and they're usually practicing their next FSO ride to get hang of the ballistics; it's so easy to find something to shoot at.
