Baby Blues (and other newspaper comics)
« on: February 25, 2009, 07:51:27 AM »
My girlfriend found a newspaper comics collection of Baby Blues somehow and brought it over for me.  I don't recall it ever being in my local paper, which is a shame because it's pretty good.  I've actually sat down and started reading through a whole collection for the first time since Calvin & Hobbes or The Far Side.  I have a few friends about to have children and I figure I'll give a collection of these for a present.

I'm curious as to how the authors get to make their Sunday strips as they see fit.  They don't follow the normal panel-line restrictions, but then again I haven't looked into that issue since Watterson, and don't know if paper's allow more leeway now.  I suppose it's possible they just put their Sundays up on a webpage or something, too.

It got me thinking what other comics might be out there...  What are some local favorites of yours?

Here's the Baby Blues homepage, by the way:

^ and Get Fuzzy- I don't think anything else in the Comics section around here is remotely close to being comic.

"Zits" is pretty good for those who are already a bit past the "Baby Blues" (which I have also enjoyed a lot) :)
It is the one I always save for last in our local newspaper.

I'm still a huge fan of "Mother Goose and Grimm", have been since I was a kid. It was always my second, behind "Calvin and Hobbes".

I cut this one out and put it on my desk at work just this past Sunday in fact.

Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

fellas fellas, there is clearly no contest, Far side is easily the greatest comic ever

had a daily calender with a new Far Side each day, best thing ever, this is easily the funniest comic out there

I'd have to agree with you that it's the funniest...  Calvin & Hobbes will always remain my favorite from an art-appreciation standpoint though.

God how I miss Far Side and Calvin.  I've been sticking to Non Sequitur and Fox Trot (Fox Trot is in the Sunday paper only now.)  Get Fuzzy is real good too.
He's a lover, not a fighter... but he's also a fighter, so don't get any ideas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRaTekm9Ak8  http://one_foggy.tripod.com/sounds/afu_jokeson.wav
