WWII on GoogleEarth
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:55:21 AM »
For those of you WWII buffs who are also geeks, like me :D, here is a cool YouTube video of a few WWII places found on GoogleEarth.

Has anybody else found any interesting historical military sites on GoogleEarth?

What, no Hiroshima, Nagasaki?  I will never know where they are at.   :D

Not WWII, but I like to go looking on Google Earth for important Civil war sites and locations. Can actually be pretty difficult in some locations, since rivers, roads and wooded areas are so different almost 150 years later. Modern photos look almost nothing like the way they were then.

Of course, I also went through and located all the 8th AAF bases from WWII that I was aware of a few years back, and a lot are still plainly evident from the air today.

Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

i found area 51, im suprised they allowed that area to be covered

it's groom lake (dried up lake) 90 miles north of las vegas.... however it just looks like a typical military base, still pretty cool to be looking at area 51

You're so gullible.. what you see is photoshopped copy of a regular airbase to hide teh UFO's!

While I was looking at the site for either El Alamein or Tobruk, I saw a thing that would mark all battles during World War 2 on my Google earth screen, pretty cool imo.

Yeah, a LOT of places have been replaced with images from other parts of the world to keep things secret. If I remember correctly, the White House has been replaced with a tiny African village. Might've been a different governmental building though.

Again, not WWII, but if any aviation lover wants drool and weep at the same time, check out Davis-Monthan AFB.
