Winter, Desert, and Jungle Maps?
« on: March 09, 2009, 03:32:03 PM »
The more I fly in FSO's and see the different terrains, maps, and custom airbases, I have to say that having a bit of snow, desert sand, and a few palm trees would be a good change of scenery.  I'm under the impression that there are dozens of snow and desert maps out there that could be coded and used for MA play that would be balanced for all three sides.

How fun it would be to have loooong lines of sight for those constant 2800+ yard tank battles (deserts of N Africa or steppes of Eastern Europe)!!!  How fun it would be to have a bit of snow and ice to deal with!!!  Oh to see a palm tree!    :)

Can anyone comment as to why we only have green vegitation and maps with characteristics from summertime in central Europe?  (I did the searches and nada came up).

HTC has already said that maps with custom fields, terrains, etc. is not allowed in the MAs because if it has a bug it could shut down the MAs and they don't want to take that risk.

Alright then... then what about HTC modifying a current map or 2 and thinning out trees, adding in snow or desert, etc, under their own roof?

Correct me if I am wrong, but couldnt a map-maker simply take the terrain files from say the Tunisia map and apply it to the base files of one (or more) of the current maps in the MA?  Also, if the maps are used in a scenario, are that not already "proofed"?

Have you flown with 150 people in one area yet?

One would have to think that in comparison, having a flat or rolling hills desert terrain with minimal vegitation and fewer drastic changes in color would lend to LESS lag or a better frame rate.

I just find it hard to believe that there isnt a way to integrate desert terrains into the MA.  Or snow terrains either.

I've been playing this game a year and I now understand when a "vet" has issues with greeeeeeeen maps all time.

What about the maps used in the FSO? Can they be used in the MA's? I remember the Alutiens map with it's weather was absolutely amazing. (Couldn't even see my wingman from D400 for minutes at a time)

An MA map is very different than any of the other maps used. They are not just swap and play. From what I understand, a map used in the FSO would have to be totally redone from scratch. Also, those going into an FSO know what they are heading into, the MA are for everyone else, including those newbis trying to get off the ground the first time. They can't have all the "extras" in the mains because it would make it to tuff for the new guys, turning them off and possibly loosing a new subscriber.

I'm only guessing, but the reason they might not allow all these different terrain tiles ( desert, snow, tropics) might be due to file size. They would have to have all the new tiles added to the main file so newbis wouldn't have to download the game, then a terrain file, and install that. Also, some of the terrain file that you see in the FSO type maps have a lot more polygons and so take more computer to run them, again, they have to keep the game as clean as possible to make it playable for as many as they can. It is a business after all.

I usually take a frame rate hit flying on the custom maps like Japan and the old Mediterranean map.

If I understand correctly, the weather is set up by the CM's. You can do that in any map offline. And, no, FSO/AvA maps cannot be used in the MA since they won't work evenly with a three country system.

The editable AK desert map was lost, therefore couldn't be updated to AH2 standards.
