multiple issues,one cause?
« on: March 14, 2009, 06:50:16 AM »
I'll try to keep this concise. Had numerous problems recently

1 Sound through headphones suddenly going loud. Not vox, just general sounds, can bring it back to a normal level by adjusting throttle.
2 Stick losing calibration really bad, totally losing control sometimes
3 Stick mapping disappearing, especially wheel brakes which now dont work in game at all
4 vox crackly,sometimes ok,sometimes real bad
5 overclock was stable at 3.6ghz for 6 months, then had to reset cmos, system wont stay stable
6 occasional white screening

got some other issues, but these are the main ones.
system spec

q6600 quad core
biostar tpower I-45 mobo
2gb 1066 ocz reaper ram
freezer pro 7 cooler
850w modular psu
260gb hard drive
8600gt gpu   (used to have 2x8800gtx had to sell for other projects)

saitek x52pro,rudder pedals and throttle quadrant
cyber snipa headset (usb)
logitech G15 keyboard

I think the problem lies with the psu, really gonna need to change it.Worried it'll blow and fry the system.

any ideas guys?

Sounds like a MB driver issue to me.  Most likely from a MS update.  Since this is a x45 MB the drivers are Intel,  I would remove the MB drivers then reinstall, back the OC to about 3.2 or 3.4 and go from there.  Also drop the memory OC down a little

I dunno.

It could very well be power supply issues.  Sounds changing suggests potential power regulation issues in the preamp of the sound chip.  Suddenly resetting USB ports also seem to point to power regulation as well.

Easy enough to tell though.  Just go into the system BIOS and check the reported voltage levels in the hardware monitor of the BIOS.  Even though it is not that great, it should show steady voltages at the appropriate levels (i.e. 12V should be around 12V, 5V should be around 5V and so on).

If the voltage levels are bouncing around +/- .2V, or greater, you may have found your culprit.

bios updated,no change there although there was a chipset update brought out very recently.

bios voltages,only small fluctuations,stock settings

cpu volt      1.272v to 1.280v
nb/sb volt   1.096v stable
+12v          12.232v to 12.408v
DDR2          1.888v stable
FSB            1.176v stable
+3.30v        3.328v to 3.360v
+3.3vsb       3.296v stable
vbat            3.472v

Do you have a uninterpretable power supply for your system.

If so what type?

Had something like that once and it had to do with the condition of the power feed from the wall.

Too many brownouts and spikes caused some problems.

A ups or even high quality surge suppressor can be a big help.

Most UPS's tends to smooth out the power some and the really good ones condition the power but are expensive.

I'd go back to the old BIOS and motherboard drivers and see if that rectifies the issue.

much swearing and cursing later i've found the 2 culprits.Main one was power supply, got a measly 400w in and have internet and stuff seems to have settled down. Volume and vox issue was down to the sound pack i was using, even tho i have a decent soundcard. Could do with some recommendations for a good quality psu.

Corsair, Thermaltake or OCZ, good value from Ebuyer and you can RMA anything, even if there is nothing wrong with it (just say there is). Cant recommend Antec, I had 2 £60 'ers and they both turned out duff.

What kind of sound card?   If it is one that plugs into the PCI bus, try moving it to another slot.  If the sound card is sharing an IRQ with another high usage device it could cause sporadic sound related issues.

That was my first thought. Just seemed like surges. However, I sure didn't know what to do to test that theory other than switching power supplies.

btw, is that plugged into a surge protector?
