They did this with a captured P-38 as well near Italy.   I'm not sure if it is 100% proven.

You would think they may take advantage of a surprise hit.  Look at the Eastern front, German Army would used T-34 to infiltrate behind Russian line to do some damages.

urban legend ?
No urban legend. The LW had a squadron specialized in Allied planes. They got their planes from captures and salvageble crashes. Same thing for their spare parts. I have seen pictures of B-17s with LW colours.

Although, I never heard of fighters weighting in a fight, I have read reports of bombers joining the bomber stream to provide data to the German ground control. I don't know how the Americans found out about it, but, it was standard proceedure to challenge bombers which joint the stream by firing flares from the closest bomber. The flares were of different colours pre-determined (I quess by AF command). The joining bomber had to respond with a predetermined set of flares (again colour and number to be pre-determined). If the joining bomber didn't deploy the right flares, it was a fair target for the rest of the bombers in the formation.

Blitzin is not American.  He's lives in Washington DC.  ;)

Good luck with the squad.

Men of the new I/JG 53.

I invite you to fly the mighty Bf 109G-2 in the upcoming "Tunisia:  Dawn of Battle" scenario (an Aces High special event).

If interested, more information and a link to registration is available here:

http://ahevents.org/pacific-theatre/current-or-next-scenario-2.html

The first battle is on Saturday (March 28th), and registration closes on Monday, so there is not a lot of time left to register.

However, Bf 109's await you if you want them!

(For any who want to know what a scenario is, more info is here: http://ahevents.org/scenario-related/scenarios.html )
