High res pack? skuzzy? ..anybody?
« on: March 22, 2009, 10:09:19 AM »
A few questions on the high res pack?

   1) If you run it,  do you like it?

    2)  If I down load it,  can still run lower res. with no issues?

    3)  Is the high res worth the performance hit you get? ....how much did it effect you?

    4)  Is there anywhere on the HTC BBS where I could see a few high res. screen shots?

Thanks for your help!

Helm ol' Buddy ya....I run in 1024 res with the hi-res pack.

I love it for the finer detail and crsipness.

I am quite sure it wouldn't look  good using the 512 resolution.  In fact it might not look at all.

To run in 1024 and use the high res textures you need a fairly stout PC.

Best thing to do is try it!  You can adjust the sliders on your vid card etc. and in game

graphic sliders as well.

I max out at 60hz which is what my flat panel on DVI has for it's native 1280x1024 resolution.

I like the Hi-Res.

1. Yes

2. No reason you shouldn't be able to, though for best quality you should stay at your monitors recommended resolution.

3. My computer wouldn't even notice the difference between the two, that question depends on your computer hardware.

4. Forums downsizes every screenshot so it will fit on your page so it's difficult to show the difference, this may give you an idea though. http://www2.hitechcreations.com/ahgs/techmts.html

I use it also, and I just think it looks cool   :D  I also have a pretty strong computer and didn't notice any hit to it. You have two options...

1. download it and bump your textures up and see how it works for you. If its too much, or the hit is more than you are willing to pay just go back to the video set-up screen and drop the textures to 512. You do not have to uninstall anything. After you drop the texture size the game will rebuild the cache again with the 512s and your all set.

2. use the 512's but go into your video card settings and bump up the antialising. That will clean up the jagged lines a bit a make things look better without as big a hit.

1) Yes, it makes everything, including trees, bushes, grass, planes etc look sharper.  I am one that likes eye candy and dislikes the drop in immersion caused by blocky textures.
2) Yes.  Remember that to get the benefits you must download the hires pack.  Just selecting 1024 textures without downloading the special hires pack will appear to make 1024 textures but it actually just upreses the standard 512 ones.  (You knew that, but others might not.)
3)  Yes it's worth it.  On my 3G E8400 w 512M HD4850 there is essentially no effect on frame rate.

The high-res is only used when running 1024 textures.   If you do not download the hi-res pack, and you select 1024, it will really be 512.  If you have the hi-res pack but you select 512 textures, the hi-res pack will not be used by the game.

Try it.  You'll like it.  Here's a high res screenie I submitted to the contest although it really doesn't show anything from a terrain standpoint.

Nope, no collision.  Clean damage and a fly-by.

Here, I had some time so here's a couple of GV shots that better show the terrain:
