Request for Widewing
« on: February 26, 2001, 08:55:00 PM »
Hi Widewing! A while a go (Probably a year ago) I was going to get Pyro pictures of the bombadier compartment of a Droop Snoot P-38 (I figured a few of my books on the 38 would have those...but no joy!!). So if anyone has them (or could find them) it's you.

So, if you wouldn't mind, could you post some pictures here of that position (Or e-mail them to Pyro). Thank You!! (Even if you don't have any pics of that).

Also, next time you talk to Warren Bodie, ask him if he has any extra copies of his
P-38 book lying around. I need one!!!

Regards

Edit: The reason I ask is because I asked for a droop snoot P-38 and he said they probably would make one if they had enough information. It would make a great addition to AH IMHO.

Hub Zemke flew a droop snout P-38 in a couple actual missions with the 56th FG.

Bodie's book on the P38 is excellent! Mostly a "History of" type of book. Some really nice pictures I havent' seen before.

I just wish it had more hard data and detailed diagrams on the different varients though.

Howdy Sundog!

I don't have any inside shots of the P-38J or P-38L droop-snoot. Warren may have some, and I'll ask him. I seem to recall that I have seen some photos somewhere, I just can't recall the specific location with certainty. I will get back to you shortly, one way or the other.

FYI, Warren's P-38 book will be reprinted this spring in full size soft-cover format. It will distributed by Motorbooks and is being published by Warren's own Widewing Publications, for whom I do a regular contract work (co-writing, editing, etc).
Hence my user name.

Did you know that the original Droop-snoot was cobbled by the 8th AF for the pathfinder role? The aircraft has a history not unlike Gunn's solid nose B-25's developed for the 5th Air Force in the SWPA. The concept was so sound that the manufacturer began production.

Let me add one clarification:

All P-38 Droop-snoot aircraft manufactured stateside were originally built as standard P-38s. From the production line, they were flown to a modification center and converted to the Droop-snoop configuration.

Along the lines of P-38 issues.... (Is it me?)
In WB, I was an avid P-38L flier. A plane by all accounts, in a class by itself. One that does everything well.

My Gripe:
I didn't realize how poorly modelled it is in AH until last night. Granted I am not the greatest fighter pilot in AH, not even close- However, I can generally hold my own. But I was out turn-fought by a JU-88 (head-hung-low). How is that possible??? Granted, he did start with a significant alt advantage.. But a JU-88?!?!?! There is a significant problem with the Flight Model with one or both of these planes.

According to WORR's performance charts: There are only about 3 or 4 fighters that can out-turn a 38L, none are BUFFs. & High-Speed performance is among the best...

BUT,
In AH, the 38L seems to be a dog all around. Keep 300 to 400 IAS (compresses in AH around 425 vise 500+ according to docs) and straight and you are OK, otherwise you are dead.

Maybe I am just PO'd at being killed by a BUFF... Am I the only person who thinks that the 38L is undermodelled??? I love the plane, but can't stand flying it in AH.

HELP!

Max - Out!

Thanks for the info everyone. Great news on the re-issue widewing, thanks! I have Bodies P-47 book, and that is definitely a favorite among my collection   .

Max, wish I could help you. I enjoy flying the P-38, however, I am by no means an expert.
