For Guppy, SAPP, AKAK, and all other admirers of the P-38
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:46:08 PM »
The Museum of Flight in Seattle has panel discussions by WWII pilots every couple of months.  They are awesome, with excellent stories.  The following is a short excerpt that my wife, Traci (video maven that she is), put together for us.

Enjoy.

The gentleman telling the tale is Bill Allen, who flew both P-38's and P-51's with the 55th FG.  He loves the P-38 and had other interesting tales of the P-38 and of his first impression of the P-51.

I wasn't really worried about it.  There wasn't an airplane in the world that could keep up with a P-38 when it was out of control going straight down.

 :rofl

Thank your wife for us.

To that end...I guess there wasn't a plane in the world that wanted to keep up with a P-38 going straight down out of control!

would enjoy seeing more of this panel dicussion?   Too bad MOF doesn't record these and make them available on the web, or at least to museum members.

I've asked museum folks a bit about that, and I'm going to see if there is any way my wife and I can pitch in.  I've been to a lot of these panel discussions and some of the stories are *amazing* -- as amazing or more amazing than even the most-spectacular stories you have read in histories.  Some are hilarious.  Some are heartbreakingly sad.  They are stories a lot of people would truly wish to hear.
