Nose Art
« on: April 22, 2009, 01:01:38 PM »
Any reason we cant fly a bit more color?

For example, we can have a small, "sticker" that we put on the side of the fuselage right now.

However, if Squadron A wanted to fly their aircraft with a completely red nose (think yellow nosed 109E's) is there any reason we don't want to (or cant) allow that?

I think people are doing that right now. Just use a different variation of the skins.

I think the main reason against this is that HTC want the planes and vehicles to look realistic. For instance skinners have to submit documentation with their skins to prove authenticity before they can be approved for online play. The squadron patch is a not very noticable inaccuracy but an all red nose would be.

Also all the plane and vehicle shapes would have to be edited to create the new squadron colour areas, which would be a lot of work for the art dept.

I imagine doing this would also add to the video memory requirements for each shape as well.

It would look terrible... for two reasons...
A) Would be that, inevitably, for every squad that used something WWII-esque and fit in with the environment there would be two others that use something obnoxious.
B) Would be that a large area over top of the skin would stick out because it's over the weathering. It's not as noticeable with the patches, but a whole large area of plane without any panels/weathering/shadow effects etc. whatsoever would look terrible.

I can see why a customizable area in skins would be unsuitable, but what about the faculty of uploading a small icon, like the one used by squads, that can be customized by the single pilot? Something that is superimposed on the skin, just like the squad insignia. That would be nice.

Nice idea for eye candy.  I just took a look at the squads folder.  I don't think Skuzzy would want to approve one for every pilot.

But........  :huh Rewind back to the ideas for kill markings for Combat Tour.  Maybe a little more "Skuzzy" friendly (did I just invent a term?)   Still, they would have to be scaled back quite a bit, say one for every 10 - 20 kills.  Imagine running across an enemy with a nose full of kill markings.  Might actually serve some sort of "realism" intimidation purpose.

I think it would be something else to load for every person you ran into with something different. Imagine how big your HTC/vanity folder would be.

What he said, both skins, and squad art atm.
Easy in-game again.

Ok.

I can see the issue with obnoxious nose art but that could be fixed with submissions to HTC, requiring approval.

The other points - valid.

So we should just stick a fork in this one, then?
