I must say, the more I use it the more fun it is becoming. It can be quite an amazing performer. The only down side I see is every hordling goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of there way to try and pik it, to the extent of flying thru multiple possible tagets just to try and HO or pik that barn door your flying!!  Always good for some laughs
Anyway I was getting quite bored with the game, now the fun has returned just a bit 

Oh! any of you hard core 38 pilots use independent throttle control, and if so does it help much ?

Good stuff and coincidence.  I flew a couple of sorties in a 38 last night... fun stuff but I got slaughtered. Bish were coming in high and had a significant numbers advantage in the area. Plus, I have very little experience in a 38.... I suck.  Fun though.

I don't use independent throttle control too often, mostly for fuel management. I know people who have dual throttles and they say it gets you into more trouble than it gets you out of. They use it primarily for spin recovery. Snap roll, learn to love it .

Although, I'm far from being a knowledgeable source. I'd wait till Del, Ack-Ack, or Shuffler posted to get the good information.

And as a side note, good to see people getting the 38 up and enjoying them!

I useindependent throttle control and quite honestly it can be more of a hinderance at times. It only really helps out at the top of hammerheads IMO. Not something you should go out of your way and purchase just for the 38.

I tried to set up independent throttle control on my AV8R. Couldent get it to work. Select engine 1 both engines ran off of throttle 1, select engine 2, both ran off of the other throttle. Select both, both ran off of throttle 1 again.
Any ideas?

You have to map each engines to a seperate throttle controller.

Weird...when I flew AH on my laptop with an AV8R it was fine for me with dual throttles.

  ... The fact everyone and their mother dive in on you for an easy kill is what makes it a blast.  Once you get your overshoots down you wont want to leave it.

While it sounds like it would make a huge difference, in actual use it makes little difference in a fight.

   Del noted that you can make a fast flip move for use when a high speed con comes in from your 6 and, as buster said, dual throttles help marginally on a hammerhead. That is about it as far as improvement.

   Now consider your in an intense fight. With a dual throttle your just adding that much more you have to keep your mind on.... instead of on that con your dancing with.

   While dual throttle is a nice novelty, it adds little in the form of usefulness and a considerable load on concentration. I fly with a single throttle and usually have CT on. The only time I may disengage CT is chasing a fast con to get every ounce of speed from my bird.

As for high cons eating you alive...... once you get your ride figured out you'll prefer cons being higher than you. It makes for some fun fights.

I built my dual throttle by gutting 2 Prothrottles and placing the guts inside a SDS Suncom dual throttle.

I don't use the dual throttles most of the time, as B4 said, it can be more of a hindrance. Dual throttles are good for;

1. Throttling down one engine to compensate for a missing wing, you can fly straight and level with this.

2. Great hammerheads, you can really squeeze every last bit of energy out of the plane and can reverse very quickly.

3. Immersion (AKAK quote).

4. Spin recovery.

5. Making great donuts on the runway.

6. Out of plane, last ditch efforts (cut one engine and roll it hard).

Fly the 38 for a month or so, it will make flying the Ki84 a bit easier. Akin to swinging two bats on the way to the plate.

P-38 is an Awesome Fighter. I know a few tips n tricks i don't want other people to learn, so if you want I can PM you my Thoughts on the p-38 and what It can and Can not do. BTW it can't only be used as a fighter. As dr7 knows

Remember shreck, you were in a P38G and the baduns knew I was in the area.  P38G means easy kill cause Corky is around. Folks naturally go for the low 38G first because of this

Why would someone ask you for help when they can easily approach one of us dedicated P-38 flyers with far more experience for help, especially when we are not reluctant to share what we know?

I mapped the engines to the throttles. I will try it again tonight, mebbe i will figure it out.

Try setting up RPM instead of the manifold, I had them set but on my rudder peddle at one time instead of the breaks. I didn't see where it would help much but I might just not known how and where to use it.
