Experts only... Identify the two fighter aircraft

Here we have two profiles. The aircraft depicted in the lower profile should be relatively easy to identify. The upper will be more of a challenge.

I'll say the lower one is a P43 and the upper one is the P-44 (Never built). I will also guess that the upper one was the AP-4L proposal.

Edit: I am guessing the L as opposed to the J as the J has the cowl mounted MG's.

Outstanding Sundog! The upper is indeed the AP-4L. The L configuration removed the two .50 caliber Brownings from atop the engine and replaced the four .30 caliber wing guns with four .50 caliber weapons.
It was the redesigned cowling of the AP-4L that made its way (along with the R-2800 engine) to the XP-47B.

Sundog is hereby classified as an expert in the aircraft of Republic Aviation (which means he almost certainly has Warren Bodie's Thunderbolt book).  

The lower is the P-43 Lancer, which despite a poor showing in the hands of the Chinese, walloped a Spitfire Mk.II in an impromptu fly-off at Langley Field in 1941.

LOL! Yes indeed I do own that book! The best damned P-47 book available IMHO! Which, of course, is why I was asking about the P-38 book   . I kept looking at the 'mock-up' pics of the P-44 and they all showed the cowl guns, and I caught the paragraph where they referred to the AP-4J and AP-4L as the P-44 candidates. Since the P-44 mock-up was labeled the AP-4J and the upper pic looked like 'almost' a P-47, I reasoned that must be the AP-4L.

Now, if we get a perked 'P-47' in AH, it should obviously be the P-72! BTW, Widewing, since you have access to a lot of 'Republics' library, anymore good info we haven't seen on the P-72, XR-12, XF-103  and, my favorite P-47, the P-47J?
