Do I need a passport to cross the Canadian border?  Right now I am under the assumption that I will only need a drivers liscense and my birth certificate to cross.  I am led to believe that this is going to change june 1st of this year.  Or has it changed already?  Need to know because I am going to canada on may 22nd - the 24th.

You don't need it.......yet....but you may as well go ahead and apply for one.  Handy dandy to have.

They keep extending the deadline.  It was supposed to be two or three years ago that this was supposed to go into effect.

The question you should be asking is, "what do I need to get back into the U.S.?"

Might be able to get into Canada but can you get back into the USA? Now that is the question.

Get a passport if you can. Always a lot easier.

He'll need to show proof of citizenship such as a passport or a birth certificate.  They will allow back in if he shows a valid ID like a Driver License but US Customs will make his life a living Hell if he doesn't show the correct documents.

They've already started this on the US border with Mexico (at least at the San Ysidro crossing) and I got snagged.  Last time I went down, I had forgotten about the rule change and didn't bring my passport.  When I came back across, was asked to show proof of citizenship.  Since I didn't have my passport, I had to go inside while they ran a check which took close to 3 hours.  While I was waiting, I started up a conversation with the custom's agent and asked if it really takes that long.  He told me that it takes about 20 minutes or so but they purposefully make people that didn't bring the proper ID to wait to deter future instances where they forget their proper ID to get back across.  I know I learned my lesson, next time I go down I'm taking my passport.
