Salvation should be pretty good as long it doesn't get over done with the Transformers.

Of course they could screw it up and change John Connor around like they did in the ST movie with a parallel universe. Thats always been Hollywoods easy way out to rewrite an original storyline.

One thing I liked was how heavily armed the Federation Ships where. Obviously the armada was blown to hell by Nero's ship but man the USS Kelvin held it's own for awhile, and of course the new NCC-1701 was awesome in the amount of firepower she was unleashing at the end. I always hated the later versions of ST (like TNG) where the flagship of the Federation only has 3 torpedo launchers and a couple of phasers. (or so it seems the way it's shown in the shows)

Agreed Beefcake, however the new phasers were to star warsy imnsho. They aren't "turbo lasers" they are phasers = phased lasers.

The other thing that really does bug me is the engineering section. It looked more like a oil refinery than a starships engine room. And anybody else notice that alot of the piping and storage containers looked old and beat up? This is supposed to be a brand spanking new starship! Engineering looked more like something you would see in a old battlestar. Also it was so dang big and cavernes didn't really look like being a futuristic, warp field creating engine room.
You go from a cool looking, futuristic bridge to a oil leaking engine room with a bunch of pipes and old looking equipment WTF?

Actually, I always found that to be the problem with star strek, the ships look too clean, like nobody lives in them.

well it doesn't have to be "too clean" but what they had just didn't fit to me.

Also it's a military ship so the crew gets to spend alot of spare time "cleaning" just like nowadays. Besides in space things should be clean, it's not like your gonna track in mud from working outside

The new ship just looks awful PERIOD. Like it was drawn by a six year old. Horrible proportions, and just generally awkward. I stand by my position: They should have just increased the detailing on the classic exterior, which they could have done without ANY trouble of making it believable with modern SFX (deflector grid, visible phaser emitters, docking ports and torpedo tubes, "Aztecing" on the hull).

Adapt or die..  FWIW.. The bridge was something else that die hard classic fans complained about.  The one in this latest film will look dated in a decade or so.  We already have the tech to replicate what was in the movie.

Whiners will always find something to whine about. The new Star Trek movie is one of IMDB's top 250 films (#62) with an average rating of 8.6/10. That's impressive.

I wonder how many of those that weren't thrilled with the movie had a clue to what the movie was about before actually seeing it.

By that, I mean, how many went digging for any snippet of information about the movie, who played whom, plot leaks, rumors, or anything else before sitting down to the exta-buttered large theatre popcorn and diet soda?  ( oh, and a box of whoppers, for the chocolate fix )

I saw it pretty much cold.  All I knew was that it had to do with the original crew and Spock was played by the guy who does Sylar from Heroes.

I was not burdoned by expectations or suspicions. I had no lengthy discussions about hypothetical situations based on rumors.

I had a freakin' blast.

Best Star Trek movie to date, as far as I am concerned.

I really liked how he weaved in the little character shots you only knew about if you know the history of Star Trek, and yet still made it work for those who had never seen a Star Trek film or series at all.

Brilliantly done, overall.
