What is happening is this, the gov't is buying so much ammo due to the wars, that ammo manufacturers are switching over production to military ammo manufacturing as the profit margin is great filling gov't contracts than it is selling in the retail market.  So, they are going for the profit, understandably as they are a profit seeking industry. 

By the way, if this ammo shortage is new to you, all I can say is "welcome to March, 2009 when most people were discovering it.   If you really want ammo, you can get it on gunbroker.  Most online ammo sales companies are sold out of the popular pistol cartridges.

And maybe that's next...  Once the guys freaking out are well supplied, I shouldn't have much trouble finding the basic stuff I want on the shelves again.  And, since everyone's well supplied, demand will be lower than normal, which should make prices fall...

Ah.  That makes more sense.  I didn't think about them switching over the production lines.

Yeah, I guess I'm out of the loop.  I had enough stashed and I've been so busy with work (no time for shooting) that I'm just now running low and needing resupply.

The war and the military ammo demand has been going on for several years. We have only recently in the last year seen an dramatic increase in civilian costs of both guns and ammo.

I still think the number one driving force is plain old supply and demand. There are simply a lot of people out there thinking the government is going to take away their guns or something and are just stocking up on everything they can get their hands on.

I am sure supply/demand is playing a part, since now, when ammo does come in at a supplier, people will horde what arrives rather than just buying the one or two boxes they normally would buy. On top of that, gun sales have gone out of sight since January, and with all the new guns, and for that matter gun owners out there, demand was sure to increase.  But, industry experts have explained the military/gov't sales profit situation on many gun boards.  Old stocks drying up, new ammo needed to restock.  It will of course also effect the world wide availability of mil surp ammo.

I'm actually kind of glad the ammo thing doesn't affect the guns I shoot the most, or at least won't for quite some time.  I don't use primers, I have enough powder for quite some time (and could make more if I had to, but hope I never need to...) and have enough lead to cast my own projectiles for ten or more years.  And if I figure in my current supply of cotton canvas, and my 20lb of flint, I'm pretty well set.

I guess I could buy a bag of shot.  But then again, there is a guy down the road who makes his own...

Umm... "They" just did, yesterday.  35.5 average MPG with the original "impossible" deadline moved up an additional few years.

On a related note, Ford recently discovered the secret to making fuel efficient engines - turbocharge a lower displacement engine and give it a snazzy marketing name.  No kidding.  They're bragging about how V8s are so ancient technology, their new high tech 4 and 6 cylinders will make the "same" horsepower with half the displacement because they're using this newfangled gadget called a turbocharger.
