Okay you over age 50 AH Pilots...
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:40:37 AM »
I've noticed the past couple of years my flying is only good for about and hour. It's getting worse.
After about an hour I can't see or hit squat. It's like my eyes get tired and just refuse to focus.
If I stay on any longer the best that I can hope for is to annoy the enemy or nick him and slow him down so some youngster can come blow him away. When I started this mess in 1994 with Air Warrior I had a small 15" monitor and we played with crummy graphics. Now I'm on a 22" monitor with nice graphics and I need reading glasses just to see my cockpit instruments, much less the enemy.

Any of you older guys got any tips for eye fatigue? It's looking like somebody needs to invent Viagra for video games. :D

I use glasses but see quite well up close. What you can do is get a bigger monitor and then move back some so your eyes can adjust. Another thing is take many breaks. Look away often and get up to do some things.

My biggest problem is a sore neck and shoulders from tilting my head back to look through the lower part of my bifocals to see the monitor.  Time to get glasses just for playing AH2.

I have glasses for computer use only.  For detail work (like aiming the tank gun at long range) I take off my glasses and get close (I'm as near sighted as Mr. McGoo... and that reference tells you I'm older than dirt).  If you're getting headaches or fuzzy eyesight, it could mean your prescrition isn't good for the distance between your eyes and the screen.  As you get older your accommodation, the ability to change focal distance, essentially goes away.  So you need glasses for each specific distance.  I have reading glasses, computer glasses, bifocals, and full distance dark glasses.

I would suggest you measure the distance between your eyes and the screen and then visit your ophthalmologist for a checkup and a new prescription.

I have noticed that age is not good for air combat.  When I started 22 years ago on Air Warrior version 1.0, I was actually good- hit number one once.  Now, with the reaction time of a three toed sloth on sleeping pills, I am considerably worse than average.

I am 51, so I went out and got a 25" monitor. Still can't see anything...... but now I get air sick too.

Man am I glad that I am not the only one, I too started back in the AW days and was a "fair" stick now I just suck no way around it and I get killed lot cause I can't see as well as I used to (not to mention my acm has gone to the devil).

The doc told me "dry eyes" can happen after long staring at puter screen and recommended eye drops when things start to get fuzzy and it does work but nothing but glasses can fix old age LOL

Nothing "fixes" old age. Im having trouble reading, especially in lower light. That and Im not seeing the shooting targets like I used to.

OK so I go to the eye Doc, endure his frowning after he hears I actually shoot guns "I guess in his world street cops shouldnt", and tell him I need something to fix my eyes. He tests me 20/20 like Ive always been and when I ask him, "what in heck is happening then"? He says, "your just getting old". :frown:

So forgettaboutit. Were on the downslope and nothing is going to change that.

If you're lucky, you get to be old.

1 or 2 really good fights burns me out. Decision making process slows, reflex's slow, concentration lags.

Some nights a half hour in a wirble is a nice way to cap off the experience with. Lets me with a bit of luck get a few more kills and its easier on this ol fart. Normally I don't have to think as much, work as hard to get a wirble kill. There is time to wind down, relax and take a few pot shots at anyone silly enough to get close.

Might give it a try. Otherwise its pretty much going to be fly for an hour, and walk away for a couple.
