Sound warping/stuttering near other planes/fights
« on: May 25, 2009, 11:56:50 AM »
Howdy all -

So I have a kick bellybutton new rig built professionally by TilDeath.  Since I got the new rig and have been playing, I have noticed what sounds like lasers and warping sounds, plus sound stuttering whenever i get into it with enemy planes.    These problems do not happen in other games/apps.  Seems to be worst when I am being fired at, closing fast on multiple baddies, and/or transitioning sound situations.  There are NO other problems...this rig runs AH without hitch, except sound wise.

At first I thought I was using too big and burly of a sound pack for my on-board chipset.  So I scaled down to Mitsu's, which is great, but not super-large.  Still had the problem.  So, I scaled down to the original game sound pack.  Still have the problem.

I have tried updating sound drivers using manufacturer's updated driver sets but that did not help.  Has anyone else experienced something like this?  Any ideas about what could be going wrong?  TilDeath and I will probably keep working the problem, but I wanted to reach out and see if anyone knows what might be going on after seeing my symptoms.

PC Info:

MoBo: Gigabyte EP45T-UD3P (using on-board Realtek Sound chipset)
CPU:  OC'ed Intel C2D E8400
RAM:  OCZ SLI-Ready DDR3 1800 - 4GB
Gfx:  EVGA GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
OS:  XP Pro 32-bit
HDD:  WD 640GB SATA

I use a Gigabyte motherboard with Realtek sound and the same thing happens to me, infrequently.  I just chalk it up to bad 3D positional sound drivers.  The original Realtek drivers for my board had the Doppler shift backwards making AH sound like a cartoon; updated drivers fixed that, but it still stutters or goes off on a temporary Doppler scream occassionally.

That's what I am thinking, except this has not been a problem for other AH'ers with similar or exactly the same build as I have.  Only diff is Vista on the other boxes....

It's worth a shot. If it doesn't work you can always return the sound-card to the retailer or keep it for a, "rainy day."

After investing your money on this rig you really need to lose the on-board audio and invest in a dedicated soundcard. If affordable I highly recommend the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium sound card ( PCI-e ). You'll love the sound, and you should see an increase of video performance as well, ( i.e. increased f.p.s rendering ). It's Game Mode has really increased my computer's gaming performance and enjoyment.

Scratchman, you are correct in parts of it. However, with his video card and processor, he won't see increased video performance. It will mainly free up the processor of one more task and probably add some audio quality to the mix.

I have the same board and the same issue
I think it has something to do with the "HD" sound crap.
I'm going to install a sound card soon to get rid of it.

Hmmm maybe that's the problem.  It's really too bad as a board of this quality on a rig of this quality should be able to handle this sort of thing.  Maybe I should contact Gigabyte and see what they say...

I solved the problem by going to a USB headset.  No stutters squeaks etc.

Headset doesn't use the sound card or sound card drivers, IIRC.  It's its own separate device.
