Vehicles and Strategy
« on: February 02, 2000, 10:33:00 AM »
Currently AH features a strong bias toward fighter vs fighter activities, with the main role of bombers being to bomb acks from 20k.

Vehicles, when introduced will have little value other than being annoying pests to the fighters. Tanks and Flakpanzers will be effective at killing paras and vulching(from the ground) enemy airbases, and maybe taking out acks.

If some of the following was done, then strategy would possibly be more varied and *gasp* realistic too.

1. Fix the damn acks. Put more, and much less accurate light AAA around airbases and put medium/heavy AAA around the factory areas.
2. Have a Half-Track that can carry 10 troops to capture stuff with.
3. Make factories capturable if "X" airfields nearby are also captured.
4. Put a time-limit between when a field is captured, and when it becomes useable again.
5. Have limits on the type of aircraft that can be flown out of the different field types. Eg: No B-17's out of the small forward fields.
6. Supply routes. Have a rail system with bridges, stations, marshalling yards, etc. that if damaged affect other facilities "downstream" of them. Make them capturable too.
7. Let the C-47 carry supplies, and maybe even the heavy bombers too. (B-17/B-24, He111 etc. did many supply drops in WW2)

8.Very Important: A "manual" that explains fully and precisely how the strategy system works, with examples of various situations and "mission profiles" that would be effective for each plane type. So the players know what to do, and why to do it.

I must concur with the right honourable gentleman's concerns, finding particular interest in point number two.

Here, here!

Have to be careful with #4, In brand AW after team A captures a base and in the between time till it comes up team B or even team c will drop there own troops to capture or recapture that base.  Makes it tough to keep the base if a few folks are paying attention to the time limits (and they do). Butt i do like your ideas.

Like the idea of supply drops. Really would be cool. So let's say if you dropped a full load of supplys from a C47 little guys would run out and get it?
Then a hanger or something would spring up??

HTC mentioned that it would be some time , if at all, that vehicles play in any part of the strat. (I think it was HT that mentioned this)

I have a different theory, but alas, I need to create my own sim if I am to practice my theory!

in the Help and Training board I started a thread titled "The Importance of Strat Strikes and Teamwork" (or something very similar to that anyway =)
I believe the first post does a pretty good job at breaking down how the strat system works, and everything I wrote comes from my exprience in the area.

How's this for an idea to fix the acks: make them man-able, and purge Otto from the game entirely.  This will allow people who are tired of flying to sit back and do some skeet shooting.  No one will be able to complain about uber ack.

If no one feels like manning ack, then the field is undefended, like in real life.

To prevent an undefended field from being taken by a solo C-47, require that certain targets at the field be destroyed before troops could take it.  Maybe the barracks and the tower.

I can see some people joining the enemy country just to man the acks at a target field to prevent the locals from manning them.  I'm not sure how to handle this dweeb tactic, maybe players who are manning acks could be susceptable to friendly fire.

I think manning acks would be fun from time to time.  After 3 or 4 consecutive fighter missions, I'm usually up for a change of pace, and firing 20mm or 30mm acks at vulchers sounds like fun.

Um...in real life people where conscripted to man the acks. So everyone who logs on would take their chances..Maybe you would be sitting in the 20mm position at field 5 for 3 hrs...Maybe bakeing bread at Knight HQ.
Ill keep AH world and skip real life thanks, 7 years in the infantry kind of cures you of any love of peeling potatos.

Amen brother Pongo, If you remove otto acks, all you end up with is mass field rotation every 20 mins, since no one would need to buff, just run a goon to nearest undefended field.

Numbah 8 is pretty good too.    A detailed manual and some better tech tips for us with legacy systems is sorely needed.
Some of you techy types oughta bump heads together and come up with something for us to work with, eh?
