This doesn't say a thing about its capabilities, other than to drop a torpedo.
In the time, it probably was the only torpedo-bomber which could be put to use in numbers.

Other than numbers, the Fish's only advantage would be manoeuvrability and STOL capability!

No, most Ship's Anti-Aircraft could not take into account it's slow speed.   This is precisely how the Bismarck became a sitting duck.   Unfortunately, the Scharnhorst raid was different and wasn't executed properly.

But, the Swordfish would be a more viable plane, than the B-29.

Absolutely, as would the CR42.

You don't know much about the Stringbag.  I know you have an irrational hate of the Spitfire, but are you anti every British aircraft?

If it was so useless, i wonder why it was in service longer than the replacement Albacore, and it went on to use rocket projectiles and radar in the maritime patrol role?  I cannot think of another radar equipped biplane?

So people will still fly lancs and 17s if we had B-29s and He-177s?

don't get me wrong, I'm not against this plane at all.  I just think there would be better things that HTC could throw their time at like giving the Russians and Italians more toys to play with instead of giving us another out of date fighter.

There are other arenas other than the Late War arenas that need their planesets filled by "out of date" fighters.  I guess some people are just stuck in the late war, fast plane with a lot of cannon mind set.

Alot of people play the game JUST FOR the special events. For that reason we need to look beyond whether it would be a "hangar queen" in the LW arenas or not.

The B-29 is no.1001 on the list of 1001 things Aces High needs.   There is no valid necessity for it.   The Beaufighter, I.A.R. 81c, Swordfish, He-111, Ju-52, G4M, Catalina and D.520 are way the hell out in front of it.    Not only Special Events, but a more broad representation on the participants in WWII.

great point.

not exactly in every case but wasn't the P-39 a widely requested add on to the game only to become a "drag queen"

I understand it would still be useful in the FSO and special event's, being why I mentioned that in the first place if you all were paying attention to my last post.  But in the MA (Main Arena) it would probably just get owned 9 times out of 10.  Not exactly sure but I heard it was replaced by the F4F wildcat in WWII and that even bird doesn't hardly see the use it should.
I see plenty of people flying P-39s. Hell, I'll take the occasional P-39.

Out of curiosity, did it have any forward mounted guns?  :D

oops, my bad.  yeah i was talking about the sordfish.  I tried using the JU88 the other day to sink a carrier  :cry and it looks pretty suicidal.  I don't think adding any another torp bird is gonna change those odds at all.

Please, let me rephrase...

Because I suck, I want an uber plane to make me look better than I am.
There...

I'd love to see the swordfish and hey, don't forget the Dornier Do 217. :)

actually I think the sordfish only wounded the biz.  thr royal navy took care of the rest.

Erm?
Yes, it only wounded it, but how critically? I would say that if not for the swordfish, she wouldn't of been sunk

Quote from: http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq118-1.htm
Following an abortive air strike that afternoon in which fourteen Swordfish mistakenly attacked (but missed) Sheffield, a second strike of fifteen Swordfish took off from Ark Royal at 1910 that evening. Over the next hour or so, in conditions of low clouds, strong winds, and fading daylight, the aircraft released thirteen torpedoes in a series of attacks against the German battleship. While the poor weather made these attacks difficult, it also threw off the aim of the German antiaircraft gunners, and no planes were lost. Two torpedoes struck Bismarck, one with little effect, but the other wrecked her steering gear and jammed the rudder. This lucky blow sealed her fate. Slowed to a crawl by the damage, Bismarck could no longer escape her converging pursuers.

Exactly.  If the torpedoes from the Swordfish didn't hit the rudders on the Bismark and jam them, the Bismark would have made it to safe waters and air cover from the Luftwaffe.  So, while it can be said that the Swordfish didn't sink the Bismark, the Swordfish did put the final nail in Bismark's coffin.

The Bismarck's guns could not properly target the Swordfish as the plane was too slow and threw off the crew (and system IIRC).

A "POS Biplane" (dubbed as such by a few in here) was a thorn in the side of an Excellent German Kreigsmarine.   I guarantee you, they respected that plane when they saw it.   Listening to Curval's guest from Bermuda at the 2003 Con, that was a Swordfish pilot was in the least, incredible.

Unfortunately, for the Swordfish to be really viable, there will have to be a way for HTC to model out the US1945 task force AA capabilities in the EW / MW to something more akin to the Italian 1940 AA capabilities.

Real life gunners may have had a problem tracking a slow target -- the game doesn't seem to have that same difficulty.
