Unique Spitfire Skins? (Guppy)
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:18:00 PM »
This question goes out to anyone, but Sir Guppy is the man in the know.

Guppy,

Do you happen to have any info/pictures of Spitfires (Pref XVI, IX or VIII) with very unique paint jobs? I’m looking for inspiration. :D

Kev did the silver ones we could dig up for the I, VIII, IX and XVI.  I'll do some more looking and see if there are any other unique Spits along those lines.  Obviously the Pink Spits got done as did the high altitude camo Spit VII on the VIII

I'd thought about doing a High Alt Flight Spitfire (guys who went after the JU-88P?) but it's hard to find pics of those airplanes, at any rate they had modified armament (no MGs I believe) so I don't know if HTC would accept it.

They chucked all cannons and all but 2 of the .303 cals. They were field modified to strip everything from them, but probably carried normal line paint schemes.

Nope, he's talking about the one that went after the Ju86R I believe.  That had both cannons. 1 jammed when the pilot got his shot.  That was a modified IX.  The ones in the MTO that went after the Ju86P were modified Spit Vs with 4 blade props etc.  Paint jobs were anything but ordinary.

Yep, flown by Emanuel Galetzine on Sept. 12, 1942. The IX was stripped down of all armor and of the 303's. At over 40,000 ft. it was the hightest air-to-air fight in the war.

Just to show off a little bit.  Young CorkyJr, long time Spit dweeb got to talk Spits with Prince Emanuel Galtizine, RAF Coltishall, 1986.  It was the 41 Squadron reunion.  Galitzine flew XIIs with 41 squadron in 1943 downing a 190 in September of that year.  Got to correspond with then meet him in England. That's the B of B flight Spitfire II, a geniune B of B vet, painted in 41 squadron markings behind us.  Got to spend some time in the cockpit of that bird.  Twas a long time ago in a galaxy far away :)

Galitzine's modified IX from 1942.  There is a photo of it too, but before conversion and paint.  I'd like to think his word for it is  good enough on the paint job however :)

Well I've read blurbs (short ones) in 2 different books that discussed the Ju86R huntings, and they said they stripped the cannons off, leaving only 2 MGs onboard. I guess both were wrong.

I can post you Galitzine's combat report where he talks about the jammed cannon.  I heard him say it too.  Well documented in "Spitfire-a Documentary History" by Alfred Price as well.

I think you are mixing up the two stories Krusty.  In the Med they modified some Spitfire Vbs to try and catch Ju86P recce birds.  They got 4 blade props, had everything stripped out, including radios and had their cannon replaced by 2 50 cals.  They even went up with only limited fuel to save weight.  Different Spits, different places, roughly the same time frame as the MTO bit was the summer of 42 and the ETO bit was Fall of 42.
