Wednesday Night Mission 6.17.09
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:08:31 PM »
Kick off is 8:00PM CST

This week American bombers will be going into the Fatherland to strike another industrial target. Intel has leaked to the German high command and they have informed their squads stationed in or near Colmar, Freiburg, and Offenburg to be ready to intercept a bomber stream any day now.

Allies A15:

B-17G - No higher then 25K

P-38J - No higher then 30K
P-47D-11    ''
P-47D-25    ''
P-51D        ''

Axis A7:

Bf109G-2 No higher then 30k
Bf109G-6        "
Bf109G-14      "
Be110G-2       "
Fw190A-8      "
Fw190D-9      "

I ask that Axis fighters do not pass the black line which is the vertical 9 line until bombers show up on radar or are visually spotted from behind it.

There was some confusion when some of the newer guys that flew bombers last mission. Bombers wont be flying at full throttle while we are leveled off. This is to let us keep a tight formation and to give axis time to get a run on us before we drop on the strat. We try to make these missions fun for everyone so people come back for more.

Since there has been some trouble in the past with Titanic Tuesdays running longer then they should in the past we will postpone the mission until Thursday 6.18 if it does this week.

P38L's majority were PTO birds. The P38J models were in force in the ETO during the 8th daylight raids so i can assume that is why there are no L models.

The L was in the ETO and many of the J's were kitted out to be just like the L (dive flap and boosted ailerons)

Quote
"Nothing, to these pilots, after the hard winter of 1943-44 could be more beautiful than a P-38L outrolling and tailgating a German fighter straight down, following a spin or split-S or whatever gyration a startled, panicked and doomed German might attempt to initiate. You just couldn't get away from the P-38L. Whatever the German could do, the American in the P-38L could do better."

Quote
The complaints were relayed to the Lockheed factory, and design changes were incorporated in the P-38L. Prior to the arrival of the "L's" at Wormingford, many modification kits were shipped to Langford Lodge, North Ireland, for field modifications of the "J" model Lightning then arriving in the theater. Unfortunately, an early shipment aboard a DC-4 was lost at sea when the Brits shot the cargo plane from the sky. It took several months to replace the lost modification kits. Early P-38J-5-LO's were modified at Langford Lodge by the addition of the replacement kits. The kits added dive recovery flaps under the wings, outboard of the engines, and a 3000psi hydraulically boosted aileron system. The P-38L's were now coming down the production line with the aileron boost and "speed boards" installed.

And why no P38L?

Because they aren't in the setup.

The P-38L entered service with the USAAF in June of 1944, in time to support the Allied invasion of France on D-Day

The Larry has spoken. The P38L is not in the setup therefore it cannot be in the setup.

One cannot argue with logic like that so I won't.

I said its not in the mission because its not in this weeks setup. If you want to know why its not in the setup then start a thread asking the CMs why and stop hijacking this one.
