I got pulled on I-80 in 1994 about 50 miles west of Elko NV in my Ford Ranger. I was heading out to CA for ET school and the wind that morning was blowing straight out of the west and I had to keep my foot buried to the floor just to keep the truck at 65mph. Came down into a small valley and all of a sudden I'm doing almost 90mph. Figured I'd keep it in the floor since I was going to pop back up into the wind. Well right as I crested the hill there's a cop sitting in the median. I looked in the mirror as I passed by and say the lights come on, so I just pulled over before the cop even got turned around. Female cop, pretty good looking too, pulls up as I'm leaning against the tailgate with my paperwork in hand. Here's how the conversation went.
Her, "Good morning sir, do you have any idea how fast you were going back there?"
Me, "Yes ma'am, around 80-90mph coming over the hill."
Her, "Clocked you at 84mph."
Me, "yes ma'am, sorry about that but up here on the high ground in this wind I have to keep it to the floor just to maintain 65mph, so when I went down into that little valley I just kept my foot in it."
Her, "OK I can understand that. Where you wearing your seatbelt sir?"
Me, "No ma'am I wasn't."
Her, "Well at least your honest, I'm going to give you a break. Here's a $15 ticket for wasting fuel."
Me, "Wasting fuel? What the hell is that?"
Her, "I can give you the $250 speeding ticket if you like."
Me, "No ma'am, that quite alright, wasting fuel, got it, thank you very much."
That one blew me away.
