Noobie questions
« on: June 19, 2009, 01:21:39 PM »
First one of etiquette

Three friendlies are chasing a con one high left, on high right (me), and one on the con's six.  The con breaks high right directly in front of me.  Is it correct for me to take the shot?

Second is base defense

The cons are hitting my base and not vultching.  Their are hitting our town hard.  So if I take off I am low, slow, and have no E.  Is their a tactic to use to be able to get into the fight quickly without be at a complete disadvantage?  Also, are their any planes that are best to take in this situation?

Thanks for the help

1 - Take the shot! If you kill the enemy your countrymen should salute you and thank you for saving them time, bullets and fuel.

2 - Whatever aircraft you are using, use it's advantages against the enemy. In a plane that turns really tight? Try to sucker an enemy down into a turning fight. In a plane that climbs really fast? Try to get one to chase you up until he stalls and you can drop on his tail. Things like that. There are so many variables you can come up with all kinds of tactics.

Take the shot in the first scenario.

In the second you want something that accelerates quickly, climbs well and is manouverable.  A Spit XVI, La-7 or something like that are good for defense.  If you have to take off going away from the town and grab a little alt, then head back to the town.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Well... I know its a bit unorthodox, and given that its "me" its also a bit predictable... but I fly the B25H 90% of the time.  I use it as a gunship for base defense all the time as well.  Most of the time it works really well.  For some reason, fighter pilots have a irresistible urge to stop whatever they are doing, and shoot down a slow, fat bomber anytime they see one.  What most of them dont realize is that the 25H is pretty well armed for low altitude, low speed combat with its top turret and tail gun.  I have taken down most of my air attack kills doing just that.  If they are unfortunate enough to get in front of you, then you have the 75mm and the forward 50's.

Also... if you dont load bombs in the 25H, and go up with 25% fuel, you are pretty darn nimble for a bomber of that size.

It also gives your team mates a chance to reposition themselves and possibly take down some of the fighters that came screaming in after you. Seen it happen many times.

Mind you... defending a base in a B25 isnt easy.  I get smoked a LOT.  But... it is becoming less frequent the more I go up.  The key is, to learn from every sortie... no matter if you get kills, or get killed.  They say around here that you learn more by losing the dogfight... if that's the case, I will be a grandmaster in no time! LOL

And what Blooz said in his response is the best advice I have heard in quite awhile, "Whatever aircraft you are using, use it's advantages against the enemy."

Good luck, good hunting, and see you in the air.

to answer your 2nd question, take off with as little fuel as possible, stay low and build as much speed as you can, and i like to fly a cannon bird for any gvs around the map room.

1,  Everyone probably has their own idea on this one, there are probably nearly as many definitions of kill stealing as what constitutes a head-on attack.  Personally I'd probably take the shot.

2.  What you're looking for in a base defense plane is something with good acceleration, a plane that builds E quickly and is at least reasonably manuverable at low speeds.  I've been playing long enough that I pretty much use my main ride (P-38) for everything, but I wouldn't say it's the ideal choice.  I would say the 109F you used in your other post would be a decent choice, manuverable, good acceleration, good climb.  Only downside is top speed and firepower in LW which doesnt matter IMHO as much in that scenario.  Other planes I'd consider would be the La-5/7, N1K, and Spit families (probably the V or XIII), I used to enjoy using the La-5 from time to time for base defense before I became a crazed P-38 jockey.

In general you want to build up some speed before you tackle them, speed will give you options going into the fight, I'd put the base between myself and the town, climb up to 1-3k and build up some speed (in the 38 I like to have 275-30mph or more, indicated air speed before engaging.  By putting the base between you, you force the bad guys to either fly through the ack or around it which buys you time to build up for energy state before you have to fight.

If you're trying to improve your gameplay.. and etiquette I wouldn't jump in with 2 or more friendlies on a enemy con..  It is very rare for a enemy con to jump in front of your guns while he is being chased so I would move on towards enemy base.  I always see the weakling horders piling up on a single con while I move on and find kill after kill all to myself.

Second question:  If you just want to fight, take your plane of choice(Depends on my mood..Ill take an IL2 or a 109K4) and extend away from fight to build E..  After you have attained a comfortable amount of E, return to fight, guns blazing.  Good luck!   :aok

on the first. If I engaged first I stay to the end. If I find you are having to fight friendlies for one kill I move on. I am not much into ganging so will always just stay up out of the way till either one friendly gets killed or enemy dies. As a general rule I will always ask if they want help especially if it is 1 on 1.

Something maneuverable with big guns does the trick.

Oh yeah...and if you see an iL2 inbound to a dogfight... run....it will probably be strong10...he needs to be perked in that thing :D
