X-Fi Sound, Vista Compatibility
« on: July 13, 2009, 12:09:50 AM »
I've been recently having a problem that is driving me insane. The game has been working fine until recently I updated my X-Fi driver to the new SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0013. Now all my sounds work just fine for a few minutes, then I get a little sound that sounds just like a thin rubber band being snapped. The sounds will stop and sometimes come back or other times quit completely.

I have rolled back the driver, reinstalled the new one, installed X-Fi's console and reinstalled AH. With each change its getting worse.

I also noticed that I used to be able to select "Vista Compatible" in AH but that choice is no longer there. The next best is XP SP2. What's up with that?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is dropping my play time to zero.

Here is my dxdiag:

Latest isn't always greatest -- I'd go back to the previous driver version you had.  Although Skuzzy or others will probably have more technical suggestions based on your specs.

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers and sound-card completely, removing it from the computer, starting the computer (so windows realizes it's not longer there), shutting down windows, reinstalling the card, starting windows, then using the drivers that came with the sound-card?

Make sure that after you remove the drivers you use a program such as Driver Cleaner Pro to completely remove any trace of the sound drivers.

Thanks ImADot!

Unfortunately I already tried going back to the previous driver and it got worse. I'm now back on the latest driver and its worse yet. I was getting about a half hour to 45 minutes before losing the sound, now its about 5 minutes.

The wierd thing is that vox still works, I just have no sound. The little sound that proceeds the stoppage is like a little "bink", then sometimes the sound picks up again or it will just be silent and nothing I do brings it back short of rebooting. Then the reboot only lasts a few minutes.

Sound else where in Vista is working fine.

It almost seems like there is some process that is running repeatedly and sometimes it fails to connect to AH. I found something like "Sound Systems Service" that seems to start and stop, but I don't know what it does.

Thanks!

Thanks Denholm!

I haven't tried that but I did everything short of pulling the card. I'll do it if that is what is indicated since the game is pretty unplayable now.

Skuzzy, do you think I should pull the card?

Thanks!

As mentioned, I would uninstall the card using the add/remove hardware feature. Then I would shut down, pull out the card, and start windows. Now I would uninstall the sound drivers, restart windows, then use Driver Cleaner Pro to wipe any remainder of the drivers. Now I would shut down, insert the sound-card, then use the CD-ROM that came with my sound card to install the drivers.

If that doesn't do it I would call the manufacturer and tell them they need to send me a new sound-card.

Thanks Denholm! I'll give that a try when I get home.

Do you know about the "Vista Compatible" setting in AH? I saw in another thread that Skuzzy was recommending that you select WinME compatible for multi processor systems. Right now I'm set on Win XP SE compatible.

Thanks!

That's for AMD 2-core processors. Older AMD processors have a bug which Aces High happens to trigger. It has something to do with the application not being able to run smoothly on both cores. The compatibility mode set to Win98/ME bypasses the second core forcing the application to run on a single core of the processor. That way the bug won't affect the game.

I don't think compatibility mode will help you with a driver issue, though.

Problem also exists in XP with the X-Fi losing sound in the middle of games.  In most cases (at least in XP) alt+tabbing out and then starting the Creative Console, then clicking on 'Default' fixes it, no need to reboot or even exit out of the game to restore sound.
