Amazing Vista Experience

A while back one of my machines decided to give up the motherboard and so I replaced it (ASUS) with a newer eVGA in preparation for moving into W7. So I also ordered a new hard drive and took my time putting it all together and cleaning out the case and all. I didnt want to have to go back into the case later so I put both hard drives in and I thought I knew which sata ports were which and I intended to boot from the CD and install Vista to the new hard drive. Just as I hit the on button I got called away and I was gone maybe twenty minutes. When I got back the system was waiting at the login screen. I didnt know ANY version of windows could do that. I was all set for three days of pulling hair and gnashing teeth! So I entered my password and Windows reported new devices and installed them all and asked to reboot. Just that easy and Im up and running. Its never been that easy but I hope W7 holds onto that!

Funny, my recent Vista experience is the opposite...

The lap top I use for my photography business finally gave up the ghost a few days ago.  So, I decided to bite the bullet and just buy a new one rather then have the 5 year old laptop fixed.

My 5 year old XP, 512mb ram laptop felt faster then this new bloated 3GB ram Vista machine.

I dislike Vista intensely after only a few days.

No reactivation required?

I've had a similar experience with a new mobo with Vista but did have to reactivate by phone. Ditto for XP mobo swaps.

W7 RC 64bit went in smooth in less than a half-hour for me.

Ive only had a few application specific issues with Vista, but nothing that wasn't easy to take care of, other than that Ive never had any problems with it.

I think the majority of bad vista experiences come from people who buy a laptop or pc that has it pre-installed and loaded to the gills with resource eating JUNK.. such as macafee.. which causes more problems than most viruses (how ironic) . bunch of manufacturer junk that dell and hp love to glob in, office.. etcetc  all of them of course running on startup... so the brand new PC is already congested and running slow and of course being their first encounter with vista, naturally it gets the blame, when in reality all that is needed is a clean install to get all the CRAP off there and it would be a totally different experience.

I bought a laptop from gateway and the first start up EVER.. saw several programs failing to start, I.E. crashing.. all kinds of horror..   

wiped it out, reinstalled vista.. JUST VISTA.. let it up date, threw on NOD32..   never had a problem since.

While it is certainly true about the bloatware on prebuilt systems, we found it to be as flakey and problematic doing ground up installations on systems we had built ourselves.  To the point where we discontinued use of it after a few go-rounds, and remained with XP.  And wherever possible, when a laptop was required ordered it with XP, too.

It is all a moot point.  Microsoft is doing everything it can to get Vista off the market as fast as possible.  They are not doing this just for funsies.  Even though Windows 7 is built off of Vista, it has been thoroughly reorganized with many modules rewritten.

It is what Vista should have been in the first place.
