I posted this in your thread but for some reason it's not showing up.

Hey Gatt, not sure what you're looking for but maybe this will help.  It's a diagram of a 12.7mm HEI round for the Breda.  I took the liberty of labeling the PETN explosive filler.

Just looking at that picture it would seem that the sectional density of this projectile would be pretty low vis-a-vis an AP type projectile. That could result in lower ballistic performance.

Anyone have any good ballistic data (velocity, energy, max effective range, drop, etc.) for the HE vs the AP round in this gun?

Just curious.

THX PYRO,
I'll let you know what we'll find here in Italy.

Boy that's almost as much explosive as in... a firecracker.

Uh huh funked, so go drop a lighted firecracker in your cars gas tank, then let us know if it was effective.
To those who don't blow things up, it's placement, not the size of the charge that counts, however the ponit raised about ballistic performance is a good issue, since that would affect placement.

Hi PYRO,
Itrolo (one of my squadmates) received the following e-mail:

Quote
Hi, Emmanuel passed your enquiry on to me.
The Breda-SAFAT (and Scotti) 12.7mm guns both used the Vickers-designed 12.7x81SR ammunition, rather less powerful than the 12.7x99 used in the Browning, but more powerful than the 13x64B used in the MG 131.

Special loadings were developed for this cartridge, including HE and incendiary (I have an example of each in my collection). Typical projectile weight was 36.7g with a muzzle velocity of 760 m/sec.

There are illustrations of both Breda-SAFAT and Scotti guns, together with the ammunition, in my new book (author's advert follows!).

By Anthony G Williams

Needless to say, I've ordered the book. Not yet published (probably in August-September).
